Quinn, one of the hosts of Failure to Launch, takes us on a journey to one of the most important battles in Canadian history.
Comments
Alberta born but lived some formative years in Letterkenny kind of rural Ontario, kudos to Quin for recognizing and explaining the different kinds of history Canadian children are taught. It's so deeply engrained it's difficult to articulate sometimes. Great episode Quin! Hoping for more Canadian content with you!

2024-08-28 05:41:17 +0000 UTCOne can only hope. I miss hearing Nick saying “Don’t Need It” at any important time a group of people need that exact thing 😂

2024-08-25 04:56:46 +0000 UTCAs a half-Canadian (but only ever lived in the U.S.), I do enjoy learning about Canadian history. I'm actually half Quebecois; my grandparents crossed the divide, so to speak (my grandmother was from a French-speaking family, my grandfather English). They got married in the 1950s, so it was less of a thing than it might have been, but my limited understanding is that it was still mildly scandalous.

2024-08-21 23:26:07 +0000 UTCI rather enjoyed the books I read from that series.

2024-08-20 16:01:01 +0000 UTCAs an English-speaking Ontarian, I remember learning about this, but it's been too long to remember if anyone was treated like a hero. I can confirm that we didn't learn about how incompetent Montcalm was though.

2024-08-19 13:44:30 +0000 UTCReally enjoyed the episode, great job Quinn! I'm a Franco-Ontarian, and while I don't entirely remember what I was taught, the vague idea/vibes of what I do remember learning are along the lines of "those dastardly anglos beat us and we fought honourably and then they murdered/expelled the acadians." I don't believe we ever learned about the atrocities Wolf had committed along the St Laurence or the sheer incompetence on the French side

2024-08-19 04:11:18 +0000 UTCCassowaries are fucking terrifying. I walked past one just standing in the middle of a creek it made full eye contact with me, I have never felt more like I was about to die.

2024-08-19 03:45:59 +0000 UTCMy enemy is also Cook. In my city Melbourne they literally have something called Cooks Cottage. They dismantled his parents place in Yorkshire shipped it here and rebuilt it brick by brick in a public park. He never even lived there. Our cultural reckoning with Cook and colonialism is a massive fascy dog whistle issue here.

2024-08-19 01:21:33 +0000 UTCI'm from the far north living in the deep South, so nanaimo bars are very difficult to acquire. When you mentioned them my husband said "Oh, those are the things I'm not allowed to eat because I value our relationship"
Loquin Britton-Herndon
2024-08-19 01:18:36 +0000 UTCAs an Anglo Ontarian in French immersion at an English high school in the 2000s I was taught Montcalm was a tragic hero, Wolfe an idiot who got lucky/took an outrageous risk that payed off, and Vaudreuil an incompetent busybody civilian who should have stopped interfering in military decisions. Very interesting to hear a wildly different account.

2024-08-18 18:17:41 +0000 UTCGreat job Quinn! However, the last battle of the Seven Years War in North America was the Battle of Signal Hill in Newfoundland on September 15, 1762.

2024-08-18 16:21:59 +0000 UTCMy grandfather was at the Battle of the Bulge and thought he got hit with a bullet only to discover it was actually a frozen piece of cow dung that got kicked up by a passing vehicle. I imagine that felt similar to getting hit by those very out of range musket balls.

2024-08-18 10:09:54 +0000 UTCThere is an awful movie that came out in 2023 about it. Just a satire. And Jim Jeffries and John Cleese were working on another movie about it too. Apparently this one is from the Emu's perspective.

2024-08-18 08:16:18 +0000 UTCTwo things. While a weaponized T-Rex against grapeshot would be amazing. There’s a line in Jurassic World talking about having Velociraptors in Tora Bora, and I’ve thought a Raptor vs Bin Laden movie was needed from that. Second, if the Australian Aboriginals hadn’t killed off all the Megafauna in Australian tens of thousands of years ago, and instead bred and trained them, we could’ve seen British cavalry charges at Waterloo with some epic animals.
