Model Changes: I’m not sure anymore (please read)
Added 2019-10-14 22:37:54 +0000 UTCHey guys, I hope you are doing good!
So, I was doing some math and figuring out some stuff for the model changes, and quite frankly, after I did the math, I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Of course, more ability and freedom of posing is always welcome, but there’s always a trade off, and in this case, is price increase, and it’s when stuff gets both tricky and muddy.
Flex Changes.
There are times where some models are open enough, and some others just won’t open enough. This is why I thought about adding more genital flexes. These flexes should make posing more versatile. The flexes are:
- Width and Height-wise Open for both Genitalia and Anus (2 (W and H) * 2 (P and A) = 4.
- Secondary P Open and Secondary A open = 2 flexes.
Wait, why do we need 2 more “Open” flexes? You may ask. Well, from some tests I made, the width and height open ones work better (way better) with the secondary Open ones.
Rig Changes.
The rig changes are many, but this is condensed because, honestly, this segment in the original post got awfully long (and honestly, this condensed segment doesn’t look as impressive.) This is actually a rewrite of the original post, so the summary for this is adding some root bones. These bones will improve the current posing:
- Eye posing
- Mouth Posing that gives a huge window for mouth adjustments.
- By doing these changes, the Rig Script may need an update, which in turn, may also need an optimization.
Sounds good, so what’s the catch?
Catch? Dude, I did some math and I’m not comfortable with this. Catch is one thing. This is beyond a catch.
I analyzed my previous pricing and used percentage increase so I could get more or less an idea of how much should I increase the price instead of using an arbitrary number.
The first change was from $60 to $80. My idea was a to increase 30%. Since I ended with a number I don’t like (I rather use numbers of base 5. Don’t know if that’s the right term, but I mean “numbers that can be divided by 5”) I rounded it up to $80, which ended up being 33.33% more.
I wanted to apply the same idea because, while I think the changes are not as many from the first anniversary, I believe they are pretty big and important. So, I did the same thing: Increase 30% and round it up. And I didn’t like the number I saw.
If I were to increase the 30% of 80, I would get $104 as a price, and if I were to round it up “for developing scripting and improving the rig script” (#ShitModelBuildersSays) the final price is $110.
Now don’t get me wrong: these changes affect EVERYTHING I do, so this means, if I ever open commissions again (chances are won’t) the pricing is also going to increase. It is at this point however, when I think I’m going a little too far.
I have a lot of self loath. I believe my models are not that good and I feel I'm already stealing money from people already paying $80 a model. However, while I’m increasing model functionality, charging $110 for a model makes me feel like The Model Corner is going to lose the essence that made it shine.
One of the reasons I made this Patreon was for you, the people who got turned down by open-to-commissions Model Builders. In this Patreon page, I would offer the lowest price of the market in exchange of giving away full control and compete with other people and their submissions, which in turn made out to be an amazing community.
Yes, models have evolved. Yes, more functionality is needed, but I feel like something is wrong with this price. A part of me says “your pricing is correct because of the changes you are proposing are both for posing and QOL-ish. Keep in mind that there’s even some of your patrons who believe you are selling yourself really low and are incredibly happy for the work you do” but a part of me also says “People might as well take the risk to get turned down by a Model Builder than trying to reach the current model price for The Model Corner.”
I am well aware that one of the greatest benefits and the biggest reason why people support this Patreon page, is because by pledging $2 they already have a voice and a chance to win, but again, there’s this gnawing on the back of my head that tells me this is wrong. I think this is one of those decisions that can improve the quality of my models, or they can just destroy The Model Corner. I don’t want that to happen to The Model Corner.
That’s why I want your opinion, guys. These changes are big, but I’m terribly scared of them. Your opinion is the most important, because you guys are the one giving your hard earned money. So please, tell me what you think.
