It had been a long time coming, but it was finally time. Summer had arrived, and it was time to get out there and enjoy it. And as far as summer fun was concerned, there were few places better than hiking up to a lakeside cottage and taking in the rays.

...Well, tropical beaches were really nice too, but shelling out the money to travel wasn't quite in the cards yet. Neither of them minded; if anything, they were excited to cut loose and unwind a little closer to home.

Mia and Celes had a special place in their shared memories for lakes—they reunited at a modest lake when they were budding adolescents, after all—and it was an opportunity for the pair to enjoy themselves, their dispositions sunnier, more carefree than ever.

Celes had even taken it upon herself to prepare swimwear for both of them! Mia liked what they were wearing; a shirt-and-short combo, deep red with little embroidered cogs around the sleeves. The outfit hugged their lithe frame to show off Mia's athletic profile. As usual, Celes was considerate enough to add a little button-up flap just above Mia's butt, large enough for their bushy cat tail to wriggle out.

"Wooooow, lookit that." Mia whistled, bouncing onto a dock that cut towards the center of the lake. "The sun's reflection is brilliant on that water."

"It's a wonderful day for a swim." Celes nodded, taking a careful step onto the floating dock, a pair of boots clopping behind Mia. Celes wore a white skirt that went down to her knees, the hem decorated with ruffles. She raised her hands to unbutton a tropical-patterned blouse, humming to herself.

Mia glanced around to Celes; their feline eyes dilated as Celes' blouse fluttered to the desk, revealing a flower-pattern bikini top.

"Whoa. Hold that superlative... C'les, yer drop-dead gorgeous!" Mia smirked with an approving nod.

"I-I wanted to experiment a little bit... It's just us today, after all." Celes nodded, raising a hand to her cheek; her cheeks darkened bashfully as she collected her thoughts. "D, do you like it?"

"Yeah! Suits ya~" Mia beamed. They lowered a mini cooler to the dock, before looking over the water.

Mia took a deep breath. "Ahhh... y'smell that? That fishy, natural smell. You don't get that in the city, they just dump a buncha chlorine in."

"It's nice to return to nature like this." Celes nodded, walking up to Mia's side. "We could get some fishing in too..."

"Hey, hey, no casting off when I'm in the water!" Mia patted Celes shoulder firmly, before stepping forward towards the end of the dock. "Ser'sly, you haven't even seen my world championship calibre diving technique!"

"Ooh!" Celes lit up, clapping her hands together. "I wanna see, lemme see!!"

"Ihihi! Better have the camera ready, gotta get the money shot, y'here!?" Mia whooped, bouncing up and down, getting some stretches in. They leaned over the side of the water, getting a little at their reflection in the water.

Mia paused, their large, feline ears tilting back slightly; their tail wagged back and forth excitedly.

"...Mia?" Celes tilted her head quizzically. "Aren't you going to jump...?"

"Need a lil help here C'les." Mia whispered, gesturing to their cheek with two fingers.

"...oh. Oh!" Celes hurried forward to Mia's side. She kneeled down daintily, lowering her head to peck a quick little kiss on Mia's cheek.

In an instant, Mia's fur receded, revealing their skin once more; their tail zipped back into its hole flap, before disappearing back into Mia's body. Celes reached over to button up the flap just above Mia's butt, and stepped back; the diminutive slime girl gave a thumbs up.

"Thanks babe." Mia nodded, before tensing their knees. They bounced once, twice, and then...

"CANNONBAAAAAAALL!~"

Mia cackled gleefully as they flung theirself into the lake with giddy abandon, sending up a giant flume of water. Droplets splashed onto the desk and sprayed Celes, soaking her clothes and spraying beads of water atop her skin; she staggered back with a fluttery chuckle, shuffling to the end of the dock.

"How's the water, Mia!?" Celes called out as Mia crested the surface once more.

"Brrrr! S'cold!" Mia uttered, hugging theirself. "...wait, wait a tic, oop, I'm adjusting. Water's fine! C'mon in!"

"Okay!" Celes nodded, kicking off her boots, her bare feet splattering onto the deck before oozing into a puddle and sinking through the gaps between the planks of wood. She lurched forward, looking into the water; Mia drifted further away, beckoning Celes to jump for it.

Celes tried to emulate Mia's motions...

"Okay, a-one, and a-two, and a-threeeee!~"

Celes tucked herself into a cannonball... an unnervingly perfect, Celes-sized sphere, and jumped for the water. She hit the surface...

...But there wasn't a splash. The water kind of just... caught her, like she had just jumped into cling wrap. Or a spider's web.

She peaked out through one eye as the lake surface bended, before launching her upwards, globlets of slime launched in all directions.

"Whoa!" Celes spun in the air, flailing her arms wildly. Mia gawked at Celes' strange display, eyes widening as Celes fell down once more from the apex of her launch...

PLAP! Celes hit the water this time, face first this time in an approximation of a belly flop. Mia winced, muttering a stifled "ooohhh..." to theirself as Celes groaned.

She raised her head, eyes spinning in a daze. She reflexively pressed her hands down to the water to push herself back as if she had just fallen to the floor...

...And she didn't quite realize at the time that she succeeded.

"H-how was my technique...?" Celes muttered with a beleaguered smile. Mia was gawking at Celes with a look of astonishment; it took Mia a moment to remember theirself and respond to Celes.

"A-ah, um... I've never seen a combination cannonball and bellyflop! Twenty outta ten!" Mia gave an enthusiastic thumbs up.

"Heheh, yaaay!~" Celes rested on her knees, clapping for her own success. On top of the water's surface. Maybe Mia would have to point it out.

"Um, Celes... didja realize that you're floating?" Mia raised a pointed finger.

"Mm? Is that strange? You're floating too..." Celes trailed off, squinting towards Mia as they swam in place, feet kicking below them. "W-wait a tic, what?"

Celes caught a familiar purple, inky puddle out of the corner of her eye. She flinched as she glanced around; splattered globs drifted towards her like oil atop the water, joining her mass. She glanced around her, before lowering her hands to the water.

She pressed down once, twice. More forcefully. The lake's surface repelled her each time.

"I-I'm floating...!" Celes gasped, covering her mouth. "Is, is this because I'm..."

Celes experimented, rising to her feet. It was like she was standing on water! She parted her arms and her legs, struggling to find her balance atop the shifting waters.

"Holy crap C'les! Wasn't there a thing in your bible stories like this??" Mia's eyes stared; they squinted, leaning forward. "Y'sure you ain't a goddess??"

"I-I don't fee-ee-eel like a goddess!" Celes swayed, her arms waving in circles. "It's like walking on ice, I'm gonna faaAAALL! Doomph!"

Celes's entire body wobbled as she fell on her ass, sitting in the middle of her own puddle of ooze. It drifted on its own accord across the lake, slowly pulling her away from Mia.

"H-hey, don't go floating off without me!" Mia paddled after Celes; despite being half-cat, they only seemed to know how to doggy paddle...

Celes lay back, staring at the sky. The sun felt nice on her body. And she felt light; floating like this was nice, in a strange way. She didn't hate this...

"Well... I think I can make the best of this." Celes eyed the mini cooler left on the dock. She extended her arm over; stretched out fifteen feet in a matter of moments, she reached in, grabbed a glass bottle of soda, and brought it back. She twisted it open, fzt, and took a sip.

"Room for one more?" Mia muttered into Celes' ear.

"Eh?" Celes blinked, glancing at Mia. "H-hey, wait-"

But Mia had their mind set on the prize, lunging forward. Their arms spread across Celes' exposed navel; Mia kicked their legs, trying to climb up over Celes, splashing more water atop the both of them. Celes lost her grip on her bottle in Mia's fervent struggle; it tipped over and spilled into the lake as Celes raised her hands to steady Mia.

It was a frantic effort, and Celes babbled as Mia clutched onto her squishy parts, flopping over top of her and laying at her side. Mia cackled all the while, uttering things like "sit still!" and "lemme up!" while Mia clambered over Celes awkwardly; their butt jerked upwards towards the heavens like a cat ready to pounce.

When the commotion settled down, Mia flopped down next to Celes, floating at her side. Celes' slime supported the werecat's form, yielding to their weight. Mia leaned over, hugging Celes from the side, leaning their head against Celes' neck.

"My girlfriend's an amazing seamstress, a friend to all living creatures... and the best pool floatie ever to boot." Mia hugged Celes tighter, a wide smile crossing their lips. "I must be the luckiest cat alive..."

Celes' body vibrated as Mia suddenly shapeshifted in her embrace, their long, floofy tail sprawling over both of them like a blanket. Mia's fur was quickly damped, soaked in water and speckled with slime. But they only had eyes for Celes...

"...Mia..." Celes turned to Mia. She was touched by their words. It was funny; when they met, they hated their quirks, they tried to ignore them, hide them from everyone. It wasn't until they met that they learned to embrace what made them different.

Then it was true. This was where their lives really began.

"This was a great idea, Mia." Celes cooed, nuzzling Mia back. "Thank you for taking me back here."

"We did it together, C'les." Mia smiled warmly. "I don't want this to ever end..."

"Then let's keep it going." Celes giggled; she leaned forward, a hair tendril wrapping gently around the back of Mia's head.

They shared a kiss, floating along the lake together. They embraced each other, their bodies inseparable, carried by the rolling waves. Their bodies pressed against one another, their warmth carrying through the chill of the cool waters.

They held each other, neither wanting to let the other go. Mia ran a hand through Celes' purple hair, always soft to the touch. Celes scootched closer, her body eager to press against Mia's.

They quietly enjoyed each other's company, surrounded by the gentle, ambient sounds of nature. The crying of the cicadas, the songs of the birds, and the gentle breeze carried them together, each held in one another's buxom.

After a while, Celes raised her head, a look of realization crossing her face. She squinted off to the distance.

"We... we've drifted pretty far from the dock." Celes murmured.

"Shhh..." Mia purred. "Just let it happen, hun~"

"...hehe..." Celes chuckled earnestly, lowering her head. "We'll wash up somewhere eventually."

Celes squeezed Mia tighter. Her eyes drifted to Mia's contented, wagging, and utterly drenched tail.

"...Heh... your fur's gonna be soaked later." Celes smirked wryly.

"That's a problem for Future Mia." Mia shrugged with a self-satisfied grin.

Celes nodded sagely. Something glistened out of the corner of her eye; she cocked her head to the side, and eyeballed the empty bottle floating off in the distance, and extended her arm to grab it. Celes chuckled to herself; she wasn't about to start littering right in front of Mia.

That was how summer started for Mia and Celes.
