This is my favorite era of Doctor Who. I love the entrance that Jodie is given here, falling through the roof of the train car and then the first notes of the theme kick in low when her face pops into view. Goosebumps. I love it that the Doctor makes her own sonic out of what she has at hand in Rahul's workshop, including the alien transport pod. And, since she's in Sheffield, some of what's at hand is steel cutlery. You can't ever see it on the show, but there's a logo visible from one of the spoons that didn't quite get melted down at the end of the sonic. I love how the companions are all just people trying to live their lives dealing with the loss and the magic that the world/universe throws at them. I get pretty tired of how during Moffat's time people die-but-not-really, so while the body count in this is shocking maybe that's another way this era feels more 'real' to me. People die. People we like and care about and love die. Family is hard. And we need one another. That feels like the world I live in, too. I also love how this ep rewards a re-watch: The expression on the Doctor's face when Tzim-Sha/Tim Shaw downloads from the gathering coils she's just been meddling with. She knows what's happening, that she has him now. And she double-checks with Tim that she's figured it out right that Karl didn't have a DNA bomb put in him, so she will let Tim trigger the bombs. Brilliant writing from Chris Chibnall. And, can I also say, this era of Doctor Who just looks amazing and beautiful. The switch to anamorphic lenses on the cameras and just the way color and light is used. There are so many places you can freeze frame and it is just art. (And kind of an overt homage to the famous painting "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" when the camera pans back and we see the Doctor with her back to us looking out at where Ryan is struggling to ride his bike and deal with his loss.) Brilliant, just brilliant.

The thing that bugs me the most about this era of the show is the hate that gets lobbed at Jodie. She’s not a bad Doctor in anyway. She did her absolute best with what she was given, unfortunately what she was given was written by the mouth-breathing moron Chris Chibnall, I’m all for trying something new but saddling a brand new Doctor with not just one full time companion but three is beyond stupid. In any other scenario when introducing a new Doctor we have a chance to get to know them and how they’ll react and work with their one maybe two companions. Chris is the definition of “Show, not tell you say? Well I say fuck you.” It would be one thing if this were a jumping off point that gave the three new companions informative stories and character growth, yet it’s another thing entirely because it genuinely does not happen in their entire run. Picking 3 companions seems like a clear cut attempt to obfuscate his responsibility and requires an absolutely terrible lack of brain cells. He did it this way so he could do a plot twist later in his run and have him acting like the smartest thing to ever happen to the world and he deserves all the hate he gets and more. Fuck you, Chris Chibnall. You were always a trash writer but now you’re a full on landfill of dumb fuckery as a showrunner.
