Glad I can tag along on that amazing journey with that fantastic show! Couple things I want to mention, at the end of the first episode, there is a flashback where they show the dead witness back in the court room. This is the only flashback of the entire show. The producers decided against including more of them, they expect the audience to be attentive and smart enough to piece all the things together.
Speaking of piecing things together, every word and every gesture in this show has some meaning and purpose, even if things might seem trivial at first. During the interrogation room with Dee and the 3 detectives, they play him having him believe the dead guy had 3 kids. But if you go back to watch the opening scene in the morgue, when they go over the guy's info, they mention he had no wife, no kids.
Concerning the music in this show, you'll notice that (barring maybe 2 exceptions over all 5 seasons, not including the end of season montages) any music heard in a scene is always coming from something organic to that scene - a radio, a car radio, etc..
There is no background music track whatsoever, and it's just another thing that gives this show the extra touch of realism that many other shows miss.
Looking forward to watch more of your reacts to The Wire!
