This is one of my favourite episodes of Dr Who. Dark and emotional, with multiple suprises!

2025-02-17 19:58:30 +0000 UTCThink there’s a slight misunderstanding. The Doctor wasn’t a soldier. The two adult voices in the barn were discussing how it seemed likely the Doctor would end up a soldier and he’d come to the barn to cry about it. The male adult voice says something like ‘well he’s not going to the academy, he’ll never make a Time Lord’. So the suggestion is that The Doctor does actually avoid joining the army and goes to the academy instead. On Gallifrey, Time Lords are like the aristocracy. They get to regenerate and use Tardises and form the ruling class. But there are non Time Lord Gallifreyans - some become soldiers instead or do other non Time Lord work. Time Lords are basically the upper class of Gallifrey.

As a '78 Bronx kid that had an early introduction into sci fi via PBS watching series like this, Blakes 7, Day of the Triffids, Hitchhikers Guide through kindergarten and elementary school with mom (RIP), DocWho is a UK sci-fi series that holds a special place in my heart.... Highly recommend the UK Hitchhikers Guide after catching up on Doctor Who - love the Mos Def film, but the original series is a special kind of deep think mind trip. 42!
