Doctor Who Season 7 - Day of the Doctor 50th Anniversary Special

In 2013, something terrible is awakening in London's National Gallery; in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England; and somewhere in space an ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion.

This was a trip to watch in the theater on the 50th! I also did not know who Baker was until after when my dad explained but it still was and is a 10/10 episode for sure!

Matt Smith did the hanging from the bottom of the Tardis himself. Bit of a risk for the leading actor to do because of the fall could have caused all kinds of production issues.

Eccleston wasn't blacklisted by the BBC when this was made. He had been the star of 5 shows after Doctor Who for the BBC at this point.

Tom Baker, the 4th Doctor, had the longest and arguably most successful stint of the classic series, lasting seven seasons. It was his run that found great cult TV success in the US when they were syndicated here in the late 70s and 80s, largely on PBS stations. The Zygons first appeared in one of Tom’s early stories, called “Terror of the Zygons.” It’s a classic. They hadn’t been seen again since until this story. David Tennant had been saying he’d wished they’d return during his stint, as they were favorites of his as a kid, so their inclusion here was partly as a carrot to get him to sign on.

"I don't want to go!" Dude that was the best part of the reaction 🤣 Quick context, the Doctor left Elizabeth I after marrying her saying "I'll be right back" then didn't. In the Martha episode "Shakespeare Code" it ends with a much older Queen Elizabeth I trying to execute the Doctor for being her sworn enemy. The Doctor says to Martha that he's looking forward to finding out what he did. Well, this is where we find out, he married her then disappeared.

This was actually shot in 3D, as part of a special BBC drive to try to get 3D TV going. They got some extra funding for that, and it had special cinema screenings in many countries. There’s a couple hilarious pre-show clips you may be able to find that were used at the screenings to instruct people how to use their 3D glasses. There’s one with Strax that reveals the true nature of popcorn.

I definitely think it's time for you gentlemen to watch the 20th anniversary special, The Five Doctors. Out of any classic story it will load you up with plenty of the lore you're currently missing without actually being in any significant sense "spoilery" for lack of a better word.

I had a problem too but it worked fine when I switched to the ep on HBO/Max (or whatever ridiculous thing they're calling it today).

Whilst the composer of the Dr Who theme, Ron Grainer, has been in the credits since the beginning this is the first episode where the name of the creator of the music appears on the credits. Delia Derbyshire was part of The Radiophonic Workshop which was the special effects department for The BBC, which meant they created themes and sounds for TV and radio shows. Using only purely electronic sounds she took the score that Ron Grainer wrote and produced what would become the iconic Dr Who theme tune. Unfortunately, due to BBC politics of the time she was never fully credited for creating the music which thankfully was rectified in this anniversary special. For anyone interested, there is a wonderful docu-drama 'Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and the Legendary Tapes' which explores her life and love of Electronic Music.
