Doctor Who Season 6 - Ep 13 - The Wedding of River Song

Comments

So, that was season 6, one of the best overall series of new Who. Season 7 ends in the anniversary special, and then after that it’s a slow but appreciable slide. IMO, at least.

Someone questioned if they were really married because it was a Dr in a Dr suit. My thought was if some countries and some states in the US allow Skype and vertical, online marriages. I figure the Dr was still there and doing the talking it would be a real marriage. After all it's Dr Who!

I mean, respectfully I understand what they were trying to do completely but it just doesn't work for me. If a good man goes to war was supposed to be the finale then they should've aired it in that order. It was an interesting experiment to write the episodes in this order but as a season of television, finales are supposed to wrap the season up & this episode tries to encourage you to rewatch the season in a different order to understand it properly, not a sign of a well thought out season imo

The "Season Finale" isn't actually this episode, yes it is a final episode to the season, however, this is just in the timeline where the Older Doctor moves on, after setting up events for his younger self (WE follow Older him into s7) Realistically the season start is Let's Kill Hitler. With the Beginning Episodes being the penultimates upto the Finale of Demon's Run and this being A major setup episode, at least in order of story events, but we aren't following the story events in chronological order. The point of the episode is to be anti-climatic as the doctor says "it's time to step into the shadows" I admit this level of complex writing tends to not be for everyone and is more niche in appreciation, but as a lover of time travel stories, I think it handled it really well once understood.

Maybe but to put it delicately, it didn't really work... For me at least. Leaves me with a feeling of wanting more but I've already had it, if that makes sense?

The way I see it is that this is very experimental in format as a season. We are put into the story part way into the story with no real clear beginning point. If start the season with "Let's Kill Hitler" and watch through to Demon's Run, it makes a lot more sense in how everything is set up, but because it is the more convoluted timeline wise, it seems very anti-climatic when ending off with this Episode. But from a certain timeline, this is where the Doctor essentially moves forward after setting up the events by inviting himself to Silencio. The wedding happens because they are the "epicenter" just like how Matt Smith mentions he is still aging, I assume River is as well.

To put it better, this is essentially more or less the mid-season climax, where Demon's Run is the "Finale". One way to put it is that this season is very much timey-wimey as the doctor puts it by the fact that it is off set from where you think it should be. It is a very experimental way of setting up a season, where we essentially get put into the story midway through.

Jack Mingle

Yeah this finale wasn't the best. This season being 12 episodes instead of 13 was very noticeable too. Idk if this would've worked with an extra episode for a 2 part finale

"mam" is an alternative to "mum" in the UK, in the North of England for instance - rhyming with "fam". "Ma'am", I think is used for the american pronunciation as the letter "a" is longer across the pond than the one in the UK - more of a drawl. Rhyming with "Balm"

There are several minisodes in and around the 7th series. "Life with the ponds" set on Earth. 2 with Amy on the Tardis and 3 with River on the Tardis. Also 1 with Einstein on the Tardis. Another called "Night of the Doctor" which is very important to the upcoming 50th anniversary special. This one follows the episode " Name of the Doctor". They also did a TVM called " An Adventure in Space and Time" which although not having any direct links to the ongoing continuous storyline is well worth a look.

Colin Bayley

They're saying "Ma'am", Americans just pronounce the "o" in "mom" as an "a" sound lol
