Doctor Who Season 5 - Ep 9 - Cold Blood

The Silurians are awake, angry, and preparing for war - a war that could decide who gets to live on Earth, the Silurians or the humans.

It's gripping stuff! Or, it's gripping to me, anyway. And there many other later episodes he wrote that I personally really enjoy and rewatch more often than these two.

this two parter is the best writing Chibnall did for Who

In the same way we balk at the idea that any one person might speak for 8 billion humans, I hope we balk at blanket disparaging of any group or 'kind' of people. This episode is asking us to examine human nature and wonder what might be possible -- what would it take for us to become the best of humanity? A huge challenge! But what the episode is also saying is that just as the worst of humanity exists, there also exists the best of humanity. So, are all politicians evil? A very real question for us to confront in this election season! No politician at all is interested in helping working people or can have empathy or compassion at all for working people -- or any people subject to poverty or prejudices or oppressions? Any time we look at a human situation and think that it's an either/or situation, we are failing to appreciate it as a human situation. I think that both/and reality is one thing this episode is asking us to confront. There is in us the tendency to act out of fear, the tendency to violence. And there is in us the tendency to recoil from violence, the tendency to recognize others with inherent worthiness. And I know there is a sort of either/or that I am setting up here, too. But if the either/or we come to is a decision about what aspect or aspects of human nature do we want to be sure we nurture, may we choose as best we can to nurture the very best of humanity in ourselves and each other.
