Project FISH, Dev Log #003

Since the last couple updates, I made a large change to the gameplay based on my own preferences and what I enjoy most in video games, and am genuinely surprised I was able to actually get it working, which is RATHER EXCITING, but I'll go into more detail about that in the next log, for now though, we are talking about THE ART.

I think it's important to get a presentable mock-up of this game idea together relatively soonish, so I can show it off in style, to see what kind of interest there is for such a game before taking the plunge into further IDEA INDULGEMENT. But to do that, I need to at least have a few little areas implemented to give a real feel for how it plays.

So yesterday I sketched up some of the more basic area ideas, to get a better idea of what kind of assets I need to draw for each one. Cue the picturesque lake, scrapyard and RAINY SWAMP concept pieces.

For all of these, I made a point to stick to 10 colours for each area (displayed in top left). I think that limited colour palette really helps give each area its own identity and it'll be interesting to see how they look once I've drawn the assets out properly, especially for the areas where I've opted out of using black.

Despite the swamp being the most grim looking, it's also the one I'd most like to run around in. Dunno about you but I love running around areas that have heavy rain. I think I discovered my love for this in Dynasty Warriors 3 of all places, there's a particular section of the Nanman level where there's a bit of jungle you can run through where it's suddenly really rainy and oh man I just wanted to fight in there the whole time.
