Hell yeah this is a particularly momentous comic. I had toyed with "painted-style" backgrounds in the RPG comics but this was the first time I attempted to use it for characters too. I guess I stuck to just backgrounds before cause I felt lack of outline meant a high risk of lack of visual coherence. But I guess if you colour in with enough detail it'll be fine. Looking back on the RPG comics, especially in the TNT one, I didn't like how the characters looked against the background at all. Figured I should just GO ALL THE WAY and PAINT EVERYTHING UP ALL FANCY. So I did. Enter comic #429.

Fun fact: This is one of the very few comics that had me laughing out loud the instant I thought it up. That's when you know it's good. I can count on one hand the number of comics I've made that have done that. Unfortunately for my housemates this outburst occured at 3am in the kitchen, I hope I didn't wake anyone up, I was laughing for quite a while.

But yeah attached are the early sketches. Just cause the final doesn't have linework doesn't mean I can't SKETCH IT OUT WITH LINEWORK ;)

The top version is the very first draft sketch. The bottom is what I used as a guide to colour over.

Originally I planned to write RIGHT ON in some really SICK TEXT so I tried some variants (which you can see in the middle there) but ultimately it felt too tacked on and felt it was funnier to just write it in the same text as everything else.

I pretty much did all the colouring on a single layer. Mistakes weren't rubbed out, just coloured over. ALMOST LIKE A REAL PAINTING.
