Chapter 437: 'Protect'
Added 2022-10-18 17:23:56 +0000 UTCAlex had met Cedric in Coille Forest a long time ago.
The Chosen was as boisterous as he was friendly; the type of fellow who made even Alexâwhoâd desperately wanted to avoid all the Heroes at the timeâwant to sit down and have an ale with him.
He wasnât anything like the Chosen that Alex had imagined: the fountain overlooking Alricâs town square that paid tribute to the Five Heroes had depicted their leader as a shining paragon. A haughty-looking, fine featured young man who looked like he would press his own judgement on others while directing all his meagre kindness toward himself. The type of man who wouldâve been described as a paragon of goodness in the past, but also the sort of man revealed to be vile in later tales told by others.
In short, the sort of fellow who would have gladly lectured a defenceless Fool on âgodly dutiesâ, forced all the grunt work on them, and perhaps even shoved them toward the front line when it came time for battle.
But that wasnât the sort of man whoâd walked out of Coille Forest. It wasnât a man with eyes full of judgement and a self-righteous sneer on his lips, it had been Cedric; a shirtless, woad-tattooed warrior, with an easy smile, an easier kindness, and the strength of several bulls.
Alex well remembered that strength from when the Chosen had helped him up off the forest floor. At the time, it seemed an impossibility for so much power to be stuffed into one human form, and Alex would never have believed thatâonly a year and a half laterâhe would be as strong.
But, not only was the Chosenâs might far beyond preternatural, his speed also matched it, which was something Alex learned in the most abrupt and personal way when Cedricâs fist caught his jaw.
The first thing he thought wasâŠwell, nothing. There was a brief, wondrous moment in time where he was fairly sure the soul had been punched out of his body. He fully expected to be watching himself from the after-world, stupidly wondering why he was lying in the snow with his head on backwards.
The pain came next, bringing with it two bits of good news. First, that he was still alive, which was a fairly nice thing to be most of the time. Secondly, that the Chosen had obviously held back; after all, Alexâs head hadnât been blasted off his neck and sent flying halfway back to the castle.
The Fool stumbled backward, holding his jaw as the world tumbled around him.
Then something like thunder exploded; familiar⊠yet menacing.
One word echoed through his mind: âProtect.â
âOh shit,â Alexâs thoughts came as if through mud.
Theresa and Hart were yelling.
Cedric swore.
And Claygon attacked.
By the time Alex fully realised what was happening, his golem was already lunging for the Chosen, war-spear thrusting, fire-gems blazing.
âBloody heââ Cedric blurred to the side as the spear came down.
There was a terrible ripping noise.
Snow exploded in a geyser as the war-spear tore through frozen earth.
Hart drew his sword a breath before Theresa, yet both hesitated, unsure of what to do.
Drestra rushed between the golem and the Chosen, hands raised. âStop! Stop!â
Cedricâs morphic weapon flared out into a shield. âOi! Oi! Sheâs right, easy now, big guy!â
Whooom!
Fire-gems flared bright.
âClaygon!â Alex cried. âClaygon, Claygon stop!â His hands waved desperately, his mind reaching through the link to touch Claygonâs thoughts. âItâs okay. Iâm alright,â he said gently.
âProtect,â the golemâs voice ground like gravel. His body hesitated, but his mind blazed with the overwhelming urge to guard, crush, and defend.
âItâs okay.â Alex calmly went to his golem, placing a hand on one of his marble arms. It was hot. Very hot. âIâm alright. Cedric and I are having a disagreement, is all. And we shouldnât solve all disagreements with violence.â
âHe opened with violence,â Theresa growled, glaring at the Chosen.
âAyeâŠmaybe not the wisest thing Iâve done,â the Chosenâs tone was cautious, though his eyes were blazing and fixed on Alex. He still simmered with anger.
âYour words say that, but you look like youâre ready to use that other fist,â the huntress took a step toward the Chosen. âYou wonât touch him again.â
âOh, by the spirits,â Drestra swore.
Emotions flared in Claygon, threatening to ignite.
âGuys! That kind of talkâs not helping!â Alex said sharply. âIâm trying to calm things down, and any other threats are going to set him off.â
âHeâŠwants violence.â Claygonâs voice boomed in his mind. âHeâŠwill get violence.â
For a brief instant, Alex wondered how his golem had developed such a bloodthirsty streak; he immediately realised that âsonâ had taken after âfatherâ.
âNo, Claygon, no one wants any more violence,â Alex said gently.
âI donât.â Drestra glared at Cedric.
âOh come off it, that deserved a punch. Maybe ten,â the Chosen growled.
âDonât be such an idiot,â the Sage fired back.
âIdiot? Do you have anyââ He whirled on her, eyes narrowing. âOi, whyâre you actinâ like itâs no big deal? Dâjyou know?â
The Sage went quiet for a heartbeat.
The Chosenâs face washed crimson. âOh thatâs just bloody great!â
âCedric,â Alex said gently âI get it, if I were in your shoes, I mightâve punched me tooââ
âOh, if âyou was in my shoesâ, is it?â The Chosen scoffed. âYou gots any ideaââ
The golem took a step forward. Cedric tensed.
âBoth of you!â Alex said, his voice growing firmer. âCan we not do this? Please!â
âIâm tryinâ! So ya need tâtell yer mate tâback off!â the Chosen snapped.
âIâm trying,â the Fool said, his voice growing hard.
âYou started this.â Theresa pointed one of the twinbladesâ swords at Cedricâs chest. âYou donât get to complain.â
âOi, fine thing for you tâsay, aye. I threw one wee punch, then this oneââ He nodded toward Claygon. âTries tâskewer me!â
âIt wouldnât have happened if youâd acted like an adult,â Drestra snarled behind her veil. âThis is your fault.â
âMy fault? Oh, oh, so itâs fine when all oâ yous get mad about secrets anâ lies, anâ start talkinâ like we need to gut every bloody priest in the land, but oh, letâs blame olâ Cedric fer beinâ a wee bit mad at secrets anâ bloody lies! Anâââ
âHey, all of you shut up for five seconds. That includes you, Claygon. Youâre grinding your feet loud enough to wake the dead.â A deep voice cut through the din.
A shocked silence fell. Every eyeâincluding Claygonâsâlooked at the Champion.
Hart had sheathed his sword, his arms were crossed. âThis is gonna sound strange coming from me, but letâs use our words instead of cutting each other to pieces in the snow, alright? âSpecially over something we already kinda knew.â
âWaitâŠalready kinda knew?â Cedric looked at Alex. âWhat, did yâtell him too?â
âHey, Iâm just as confused as you,â Alex said. âWhatâre you talking about, Hart?â
The Champion looked at the others, his expression growing bewildered. âWhatâŠ? I thought it was obvious.â
âWhatâre you talking about?â Drestra demanded. âI just found out about twenty minutes ago! How did you know?â
Hart shrugged. âGut feeling.â He nodded to Alex. âAfter our side-journey to Crymlyn Swamp, I got to thinking about things. I mean, if the church was lying to usâand maybe our own damned god was tooâthen what the hell else did we miss? Who else was lying to us. So I started thinking about all the people Iâve met since this whole mess started.â
He looked at Alex. âThen I thought about you and the way you fight. And the more I thought about it, the less sense you made.â
âWhat? I make perfect sense!â Alex snapped, offended.
âMaybe to a drunk. Look, when you fight, you never do anything directly. And you should. Youâve built all that muscle, but you never use a warbow. I thought maybe you didnât have time to learn how, but a crossbow? Any serf can pick up one of those and use it as long as theyâve got eyes and the muscle to wind it back.â
He made a winding motion with those enormous hands. âHells, you never even throw a punch and youâve learned all that fancy magic, but you never blow anyone up like this one does.â He jerked his thumb toward Drestra, who went red.
Then the Champion pointed to the castle. âThen thereâs Baelin. Youâre so chummy with that big, bad wizard-chancellor of yours that youâre basically his grandson.â
Now it was Alex who blushed.
âBut, when heâs going into battle, heâs carrying weapons and wearing armour. And youâre not.â Hart looked Alex up and down in a way that made him feel naked. âAnd itâs not just Baelin: your girlfriendâs carrying swords, Khalik has a sword, Thundarâs got a maceâŠeveryoneâs got weapons...everyone but you. Even your bloody golemâs got a weapon, and he is a weapon. Carrying weapons is smart, if youâre getting into fights.â He blew out a misting breath. âThe Ash Ravens have gutted our fair share of wizards stupid enough not to have a weapon as a backup. All they rely on is their magic. Everyone needs a back up, itâs stupid not to have one.â
He jabbed a finger toward Alex. âAnd you arenât stupid. So I thought, âwhy the hell doesnât he carry any weapons when everyone else does? Maybe he canâtâOoooh.â. And I figured that you were probably the last member of our five manâer, four man, one womanâband. And thatâs that. I thought everyone else knew.â
âWhaâButâŠâ Alex stammered. âBut IâŠyou canât just draw a conclusion from something like that! There could have been a dozen other explanations! Thatâs not how logic works! Or science!â
âWell, I donât know any of that fancy, science stuff.â Hart shrugged. âBut I was right, wasnât I?â
âIâŠbutâŠwhaââ
âOi!â Cedric looked at the Champion, his expression utterly offended. âIfân yâthought oâ all that, why didnât yâbloody say somethinâ? Matter oâ fact, yâ talked me outta thinkinâ that somethinâ wasnât on the level witâ him!â
âYeah, so?â Hart gave the Chosen a look like he was talking to a very slow-witted sheep. âDidnât you hear what I said? I figured it out after we went to Crymlyn. Back when you were going on like a madman after the double dungeonââ
âMadman!?â Cedric cried.
âYeah, madman. I didnât have any damn idea that anything was off with Alex. I learned stuff later and I changed my mind. Even a loopy dog would understand that much.â He squinted at the glowing set of scales on Cedricâs chest, then looked at Alexâs shoulder. âYou two sure your Marks didnât get switched or something?â
Cedric and Alex made choking noises.
âButâŠwhy didnât you say anything!â Drestra demanded. âNight after night, I was lying awake thinking about this! You didnât say a word!â
He shrugged again; the gesture made the Sageâs teeth grind behind her veil.
Hart didnât seem to care one bit.
âI figured if Iâd figured it out, then the wise Sage wouldâve.â
Drestra joined the choking noises.
Hart looked at Theresa. âNow, now, no oneâs going to start cutting apart your boyfriend so I think you can put your swords away, eh?â
The huntress looked away briefly, then slowly sheathed the twinblade.
âThere we go.â Hart dusted off his hands. âAnd now no one dies in the snow. Thatâs pretty nice, isnât it?â
âOkay, okay, hold on now,â Alex said. âOkayâŠeven if you⊠âfigured it outâ,â he said, refusing to accept heâd been seen through in such a simple way. âWhyâre you acting like itâs no big deal?â
âYa!â Drestra said. âI spent nights lying awakeââ
âYou said that,â Hart pointed out.
âItâs important.â
âItâs really not.â
âIt is!â She snapped. âHow come you donât seemâŠupsetâŠor arenât thinking about it?â
âBecause itâs not that important,â Hart said. âSo what if heâs the Fool? Heâs been helping us, hasnât he? Havenât you?â He looked at Alex.
âEr, yes, butââ the Thameish wizard began.
âWell, there you have it.â The Champion interrupted, spreading his hands. âHeâs helping us. Whatâs it matter if he tells us heâs got a glowing Mark on his shoulder? And if he was going to betray us? Iâd just cut him in half, which I wonât have to do because heâs still helping us.â
âYes, butââ
âAnd there you have it,â Hart continued. âGuess the only one that isnât a Fool around here is me.â
A stunned silence filled the air.
Then Alex heard a strange sound.
A sound that was between a cough and the grinding of rock on rock. It was rhythmicâŠwarm somehow.
The young wizard slowly looked at Claygon and realised what he was hearing.
Laughter.
His golem was laughing. âFatherâŠI think I know what humour is.â
And Alex wondered when it was that heâd lost complete control of his life.
âWell,â Hart said. âIf youâre all done acting like little kids, letâs get down to business, why donât we?â
âAyeâŠâ Cedric said slowly. The anger was gone from his eyes, well most of it. He still looked a little peeved at AlexâŠand was shooting Hart dirty looks. âSorry for the punchâŠsort of. Be best if yâstart talkinâ. Yâshould have yer say anâ tell your story.â
Alex sighed.
He really needed to start making that pamphlet.

I love everything about this, and my favorite part is Caygon learning how to laugh.
