I know it can be quite confusing, but let me try to explain with more example !!!
First of all, Subsurface Scattering can be easily seen in a strong backlight scene and also, it is quite obvious under THIN Skin or any THIN subject. So this is why you can see some SS (subsurface scattering) effect right over here in the second picture. ( I don't mean this rabbit is thin... i mean his ear is thin... at least the most thin subject of his body part. >XD )
And the easiest way to tell between direct light effect and SS effect is the brightness and the saturation, i note them in the picture one.
One thing to be careful is, Subsurface Scattering is usually in high saturation and high brightness; however, i wrote "Lower Brightness" is to compare with the direct light. Since these two can be confusing.
