Subsurface Scattering happens under a beam of strong light, in the shade side of a character. Usually it implies the flesh color under the skin or it implies the sub color under a material.
If you add the subsurface scattering effect for a character, it will give more fleshy sense to them.
And note it, subsurface scattering will be very strong when the skin or material is pretty thin.
Ps. Don't mess up the light source. You have to make sure which part is illuminated by the sunlight and which part is from the sky light. Yeah the sky light happens where the sunlight is not covered.
