So happy you two enjoyed it. It's one of my favorite movies and a great example of entertainment that doesn't need to be perfect to still be thoroughly enjoyable. HIroyuki Sawano (of AOT and Kill la Kill fame) brings a soundtrack both thrilling and phenomenally tone-matched, while the visuals are vibrant and super expressive. The cinematography is unapologetically creative, while the characters and world design are fun and varied while still referencing some of Trigger's signature material. Even though the plot is fairly simple until it explodes towards the end, I never get tired of Trigger upping the ante and literally shooting the plot into outer space. The exposition dump at the end of the movie very clearly tells the audience to not take things too seriously, especially with a not-so-subtle literal Dues X Machina. I wish the movie leaned more into Kray's reluctance to sacrifice the Burnish instead of showing him revel in taking out the resistance. It's interesting when the antagonist does really bad things for good reasons and it can be fun to watch one that does really bad things because they can or want to, but Kray felt a little bit too much of both. I also thought it was too bad that most of the firefighters don't get any quality screen time outside of maybe the pizza scene. So unfortunately while they're likeable there's just not enough time to flesh out their personalities past their introduction. Lastly even though there was a ton of CGI I thought most of it was well implemented and the visuals were greatly complimented by the freedom of the CG camera. It's not always clear what's happening on screen during the fight scenes but I appreciate that they ended up with something pretty unforgettable in the process, even though I laugh out loud every time I see the shot of the Burnish hideout being knocked down just looking like a physics simulation. So overall a FUN, FUN movie. Always a treat to rewatch as you always find something else to enjoy each run.
