The Mighty Tarrasque, and Roll-to-Cast 5e
Added 2024-12-30 19:00:02 +0000 UTCBig T herself finally got an upgrade; the tarrasque was one of my oldest remaining stat blocks, and it feels great to finally do it justice. This is the main format I'm looking to use for monsters, with physical descriptions, drives, and detailed creature size; there'll still be a few more 2014-formatted monsters coming up, but it just feels like a good time to unleash the tarrasque:
I also spent far too long putting together an alternate spellcasting system for 5e inspired by Dungeon Crawl Classics; I'm aware it won't be most people's thing, but that's why I hid it in the shadow of the tarrasque. If you like this and want to see it expanded, let me know.

No, I've just been persistently failing to explain the new lore format. The concept is that common knowledge is known by anyone reasonably local without a check, with a check by anyone else; uncommon knowledge is known by anyone with a relevant background without a check, with a check by anyone else; esoteric knowledge is only known with a relevant background and a successful check. I've stopped adding DCs because I feel like they should conform themselves to the specifics of the situation; the DC for a cleric of Helm to know the history of their order should be lower than for a rando wizard who happens to have a bigger History bonus. That said, the lore rarities are meant to confer Low-Med-High DC, whatever those cash out to in the current context.

2025-01-04 13:25:15 +0000 UTCMy thinking is that it should mostly be focused on destroying whatever city the party are in, and the party's primary goal should be preventing that. Generally speaking, I'd want to spread the fight out through multiple encounters, with it charging away or burrowing to new areas and the party needing to chase after it or work out where it's headed and get ahead of it, probably with the aid of allies.

2025-01-03 05:51:30 +0000 UTCWhat are the odds, I’m running a Tarrasque campaign right now!! I’m a little wary because I know the Tarrasque is typically kind of just a wall of HP and Dmg. Any advice for giving this some interesting tactics?

2025-01-02 16:34:47 +0000 UTCI would be way down for fleshing out the roll to cast spell list. Maybe adding a few spells a week and just getting it done over time?

2024-12-31 05:50:11 +0000 UTCYeah, exactly. If you want to dip your toes in roll-to-cast, you can distribute ancient spell scrolls scribed in the days when magic was wilder and more experimental.

2024-12-30 22:31:26 +0000 UTCI'm trying to hand the foundry module off to someone who knows what they're doing right now, so I'll see if we can make that happen!

2024-12-30 22:09:27 +0000 UTCIf there is one thing I personally would love to see in the future l, it would be a module made for "the forge" so that your monsters could be added straight into games without having to update through foundry.

2024-12-30 21:22:07 +0000 UTCI second the Roll to Cast system as simply brilliant. Even if people only use it for the descriptions and the crital fails it will make spells feel more real, individual and punishing to fail. As always the new stats the tarrasque are great and breed new life into a classic yet tired monster. Please keep up the fantastic work

2024-12-30 21:19:51 +0000 UTCI think both are amazing, I will definitely be using the Roll to Cast system for something. Just to be sure: is the idea for the Tarrasque to have 0 speed unless it uses its Bonus Action to increase it?
