I mainly know this from certain farming sim games, but it's basically similar to how people wrap up hay for transport, so I can understand the confusion.

Like, beating Kaido means nothing if you don't have people you want to have a better life for. Also, I think Oda kinda tried to do a misdirect here. Before the reveal, everything was meant to indicate that Kinemon and the rest really died 20 years ago, and that we traveled with ghosts the whole time. But the execution was kind of messy, so it is just confusing until it ends in a poop joke and the ACTUAL explanation XD
