One Piece Episode 835, 836

Comments

Man, that Elbaf flashback is so cool. So many familiar faces, too. I really like the nordic village vibe. Hopefully Usopp will go there one day. Well, provided they rebuild the burning huts. But LinLin is scary. I always thought that Big Mom was eerily child like. But seeing her act like a child I don't think it's trauma, but that she might be a bit... well, I don't want to us strong words here, but 'mentally challenged'?

Didnt realize the obvious foreshadowing until rewatching it now ~ I really enjoy watching this arc again

I'm suprised her parents didnt abandon her sooner

Linlin was still just a child, so her misunderstanding things and being selfishly greedy with food isn't uncommon, but it does seem like her education wasn't really the full front of anyone's minds when it came to teaching her right from wrong, only doing so on the moment--and we didn't even see her be punished or scolded for eating all the Semla. She had good intensions on not wanting the bear and wolf to fight, but she's just unaware of her own strength, too... and Carmel didn't tell her to hold her hand more gently when she squeezed it to the point of possibly breaking bones, which seems... unwise.

Bro every single episode was so peak I don't know what to discuss now lol it's just too much I'll just say that I'd LOVE to have Katakuri's devil fruit, it's just so fascinating how it works

I feel that's a common thing in One Piece. For many villains we get explanations how they turned into who they are and in almost all cases I do feel bad for what they went through but it never just erases that what they are right now is bad and hurting others. It's always explanation but not justification. I feel bad for Big Mom as a kid never being shown any healthy boundaries and I feel bad for Doflamingo as a kid being chained to a wall, and being shot at while blindfolded. None of these things should happen to children ever no matter if those childrens have maybe already cruel tendencies, they should simply be tought better. But then now as grown ups the "but their childhood" excuse simply doesn't cut it anymore. They surpress whole kingdoms, use and abuse their own families and have dealt out harm a multitude of what they themselves had to suffer. So I can see why they took that path, but I do think eventually (which is why Bege put it so perfectly) they have and had the chance to change their future and become better for it, and eventually not doing that is now on them.

I feel bad for Linlin's abandonment but not for the vile and manipulative "Big Mom". Imagine you give birth to a kid who can kill giants at 5 years old and go on a rampage every time she's hungry. I don't know how anyone could deal with that. It's true that she has never been given a proper education and the chance to take responsability for her actions but now it's far too late and the worst part is that her children had to suffer. I feel much more sorry for them.

Honestly there's so much to dislike Big Mom for, but she's one of the biggest villainous pillars for One Piece antagonists! Girl's an Emperor of The Sea for a reason!

I love how Big Mom and her backstory and character are essentially a mirror to Sanji this arc: Sanji was constantly belittled for being too weak and nothing he ever did was the right thing or good enough and you can still see how he struggles with his self-worth because of that. Meanwhile Big Mom is insanely powerful and is constantly validated for the things she does (even the "bad" ones) giving her essentially an inflated ego and not makes her rethink her way of doing things ever to see how it effects others as she is always told everything she does is great. Meanwhile you also then have the element of Big Mom being a glutton that constantly takes everything for herself especially regarding food, while Sanji finds his happiness in cooking and feeding others. Those thematic ties and parallels is why I think this arc is SO good. Everything kind of ties back to each other. The themes of family but also food and being starved with affection/food vs having an overabundance of it. It's all works so well together. Even in many of the side plots.

I can't help but feel bad for Linlin, she cannot control who she is and Mother Carmel isn't exactly teaching her anything, she just excuses everything she does wrong. I wouldn't antagonize Linlin either but why not teach her that she shouldn't hit bears (or people) instead of just saying she's a good girl? Linlin's intentions are good, she wants everyone to be friends and she accepts Carmel's explanations when she gets them, so it's not like there's nothing to work with.
