Europe was extremely religious back then, and anything that went against the story of "We are the most important in the world" was seen as heresy. Galileo was found guilty of heresy for claiming that the Earth revolves around the Sun, not vice versa. It was literally a landmine with the Church. Btw the Salem Witch trials were in 1692, but that's just one of the more famous witch hunts(which was also bullshit it was all one big property scheme). While systematic witch hunts were also common from the 1400s to late 1700s, sorcery accusations and executions can be seen as far back as ancient Babylon. As humans, we are very superstitious and paranoid, to a fault.
