Notice how it's a theme that all of the Avatars make a mistake that ultimately changes the fate of the world. And then the Avatar has to fix that mistake, whether that be the same Avatar or one from the next generation.

From what I understand Roku stayed behind to stop the volcanoes because of their proximity to the mainland. Sozin, at home, says that he can feel the island trembling from 100 miles away, if both of those volcanoes continued, it may have eventually caused a tsunami that would be devastating to the mainland.

Roku stayed longer, bc he was trying to save the town I think. I do also believe that he was about to leave, but then Sozin showed up, and ended up staying longer bc of him.

By far my favorite episode outside of the finale obviously 👍🏽

Roku didn't handle the entire situation well, when Sozin initially suggested expanding the empire his intentions weren't entirely bad, he spoke about sharing the fire nation's wealth and prosperity. Roku could have tried to steer him towards cooperation instead of conquest, maybe he would have failed but he didn't even try, he basically just told Sozin "No, shut up!" and that was it and I didn't really get it, they were still on very good terms at that point but it seems Roku pretty much ended the friendship then end there, how else would he not notice Sozin was going forward with his plans? And when he finally learns it he barges into the throne room and tells Sozin "Do as I say or I'll kill you!" ... sure, he can do that but he acts not unlike Sozin, both have a "Might makes right" attitude and are not very diplomatically minded. And Sozin might not have been wrong that the Roku was his subject and had to technically follow his orders, the show already made it clear the avatar is not above the law when Aang decided to stand trial for a crime Kyoshi supposedly committed. If the Avatar had the right to boss world leaders around he or she would basically be a dictator and Roku almost acted like one when he decided the nation's policy going forward. Roku and Sozin were way more alike than they thought even later in life and that makes Aang's statement at the end that everyone is capable of great good and evil even better because had Sozin's and Roku's personalities been polar opposites it would be easy to see why they went in different directions but they were pretty similar, that's much better writing than portraying Roku as a peaceful hippie who couldn't hurt a fly and was betrayed by a power-hungry megalomaniac.
