You guys don't understand the true meaning of the afro brotha ๐Ÿฅฒ also it's one of my favorite Luffy look, the afro Luffy hehe. Also I do like that arc but it is kinda long so it's like a 7/10 for me.

Man thank god it's over. I never was a hater of this arc but this is a 4/10 for me, so exhausting to watch. Just way too slow, annoying at times, a lot of times I was just sighing and thinking "okay..................... okay................" I'm not gonna lie the best moment I had watching this arc with you guys is when you I started drinking my monster and you two did it too at the same time as me, shit was funny. But overall, thank god it's over, I swear to god. WATER 7 AHEAD CAN'T WAIT LET'S GOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

btw, since you're on episode 235, it's save to watch the opening on ep 237

i love how you two sound so happy to end the arc and then the first thing you see on episode 226 is Foxy and his crew xD +idk if anyone mentioned this to you, i just randomly remembered this when Sanji called Usopp a " liar". did you know that Uso in Usopp means liar? idk, just thought i'll tell you in case you didn't know. enjoy Water 7 guys ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Yeah, there is a moment even a little earlier where a character specifically brings into question Luffy's ability to be a good captain in regards to a decision he has to make that also very much plays into the episodes you mention and knowing how quickly Water 7 gets into that, I started to appreciate some of the LRLL stuff a little more in retrospect because while it is all mostly "fun and games" there, it still sets up the very general theme of "being a crew and being a captain" (Which admittedly still is not changing the fact that something like the dramatic cliffhanger of Luffy standing on rollerscales is also gladly not exactly the peak of One Piece :-D )

So we've seen the first big moment of Water 7 now (or at least we believe it to be one, episode 234-235ish) and without going into detail one of the things we bring up is how water 7 is looking like the arc that will change luffy's understanding of what it mean to be a captain, when is it captain first friend second kind of mindset potentially etc.

I think you are far enough into Water 7 now that I can give my typical LRLL why-the-anime-really-messed-with-the-small-importance-it-actually-has-in-the-mange "defense" without mentioning anything too specifc. As much as some of the changes they made in the anime seem in general small so they can add more filler to it (which then just also drags it on for too long), I feel it also messes a lot with the few a bit more serious moments I will always defend the arc for: In the manga it's still by no means a super intense and heavy arc and it is mostly a more comedic break, but I also think it has at least a little meaningful escalation to it with Luffy as a captain recklessly and mindlessly agreeing to these silly games that could and eventually do threaten to have some actual serious consequences for his crew. Chopper being taken away after the first game is a bit of a "oh shit" moment for at the very least Chopper and makes even Zoro and Sanji begrudingly admit that working together for a few seconds once again might be needed here. And then Luffy's final fight as silly as the shenanigans surrrounding it is, the raw moment of "I would rather die than lose anyone of my crew" after taking what feels like some actual pain there did always hit a bit in the feels for me (which is another problem of a manga-anime switch, in the manga this was when it was about Foxy simply taking someone away from Luffy again after Zoro/Sanji just got Chopper back, which I think feels very different from the anime version of whether the crew as a whole keeps going alone and joins Foxy all together. The looming danger of "someone is gonna be taken away from us and it's my fault" just has a different weight to it than "we all work for that idiot Foxy now but would still be together" and makes Luffy's determination kind of more meaningful there for me) Because I agree 90% of the arc is in the end some fun pirate games and the anime kind of still did those parts and there is some enjoyment from that, but depending on how far you've watched into Water 7 now (which is why I won't mention anything more specific), maybe you can already see why I do think LRLL does have it's place in the story as a prelude to Water 7 specifically as "Luffy and how to be a captain" is something that is important from the very early episodes of that arc.

Yeah, this arc has good BITS, but that's really all it has in my opinion. Not even counting the anime-canon drag-on (which also does have good BITS), those games seriously overstayed its welcome. Regardless, it was still very entertaining to watch it again with you guys, and witnessing the same frustration and amusement echoed back when I first watched it and still feel today. XD

I enjoy LRLL and I definitely prefer it over G-8. G-8 is good but that's just it. It's good. There's really nothing special about it or any really great moments. LRLL has some really great moments that make it stand out. Not surprisingly, these moments are all during the parts that are from the manga. The Barrel Race, Groggy Ring, and the fight each have really great moments and a lot of good quality comedy. The parts where the arc really falls flat are where the anime padded it out. The three games in the middle are a slog and changes such as Luffy picking a horse and fighting for 500 members really hurt the anime version. Fun fact: The whole section with Tonjit and his grandson is anime original. In the manga, right after the games are done Luffy and the crew spot Aokiji on the island and he freezes the water to allow Tonjit to walk to his family. This couldn't happen in the anime since they put in a few filler episodes before his appearance.

The "Afro-Luffy" outfit is a homage to a famous old school Japanese boxing champion, Yoko Gushiken. Dude is a legend and if you look him up its basically afro luffy with a 80s mustache lol.

I forgot how much the arc dragged on in the anime tbh. It's fine in the manga but the anime writers didn't do it any favours. Though the whole thing was worth it for the bit with your hands. That was hilarious :D
