I wish they'd at least place them more properly on the DVD release, but... Yeah. DX

I know the filler you mean. I loved them but yeah...definitely not great placement.

Speaking of the sub-roles of the StrawHats, I always feel like Nami fits a big sister role for Luffy, while Usopp is a fellow brother, and Zoro is more like the dad of the crew with Sanji hitting the mom position with his kindness and tougher love aspects. XD
As for the filler arc, many people say to skip but honestly I wouldn't mind you watching them all as most filler arcs have an interesting story to it. There is only ONE section of filler that I say skip, and that's due to the placement of the filler is literally in the middle of a very important arc (the animation staff waiting on Oda to finish so THEY could finish the story arc). Those episodes are also entertaining, silly little skits, like comedy specials or alternate universe settings, but it's so poorly placed. =/

Panda is an Easter egg from the author. In a Shonen Jump magazine villain contest, he drew Pandaman. And he constantly draws him in the manga among the crowd and stuff.
Second. The Loguetown arc ends at episode 53, followed by a filler arc. But you need to watch the beginning of episode 55, literally before they arrive on the island. There is an important point in building the world of One Piece. Skip the fillers and continue watching from episode 61.
