Imo, the English dubbed script dialogue is a lot more powerful and impactful for a number of scenes throughout this series (even if the voice acting isn’t as great), and Bertoldt’s tearful speech in this episode is by far the most standout example to me. “Who would choose to be this? Tell me! You think this is who we aspired to be?! People loathe us, and why wouldn’t they? We’re monsters. We deserve to die for the things we’ve done. We’re lost..we could live a thousand years and still never again know peace. Try to imagine that darkness. The only light was our brief time as soldiers. It was never a lie, do you understand? We’re not who we said we were, but it was never an act. We genuinely thought of you as our friends.” While the same underlying themes and messages are still there in both versions, the more raw and vulnerable depiction of their mindset in the English dub always hits me way harder.
