Georgia's Racist Voter Law Explained (Script & Sources)

Bad news, Georgia just passed a law that makes voting harder for people living in major cities, who are more likely to be BIPOC and vote Democrat, and easier for people living in rural areas where they’re more likely to be white and Republican. It also directly hurts poor voters, and gives the Republican-run state house and senate significantly more power over altering or suspending the results of an election.
Ever since Democrats won an overwhelming majority of absentee ballots in 2020, the new laws now heavily restrict those ballots. For example, voters now have half the time they did previously to request absentee ballots, along with stricter voter ID requirements to prevent their ballot from being tossed out, and it’s now illegal to mail out absentee ballot applications to all voters to make sure that they have the info they need to register to vote.
Most suspiciously, it heavily redirects the power that the state legislature has over election results. In other words, lawmakers who are currently in power in Georgia now have a disproportionate amount of power over the process that decides whether or not they stay in power, and lets them overturn or suspend election results, which is exactly what the last president was demanding the governor of Georgia do, but he legally couldn’t, and now he can. How is this even legal? Check the comments for part two!
Here’s probably the biggest point about Georgia’s voter restriction laws: not only are these not even the most restrictive voting laws in the US, but effectively ALL voter restriction laws are explicitly designed to prevent poor people and BIPOC from voting, the ONLY areas where voting becomes harder are Democrat-leaning counties with high BIPOC populations, in Republican-controlled states. It literally doesn’t happen in any other context.
And considering that all of these laws are created under the guise of preventing voter fraud, which is statistically less common than UFO sightings, shark attacks, and being struck by lightning TWICE, it’s pretty obvious that what’s happening is the political party that’s been losing the popular vote has given up on appealing to new voters and is instead trying to win elections by demographically disenfranchising voters of the other party, giving their own voters both literal and mathematical advantages in elections, and then openly taking control of election results and disqualifying or suspending the ones that don’t go in their favor - which is also exactly what the electoral college does, but we’ll talk about that in another video.
