Let's talk about sustainability (important post time!)

No, not environmental sustainability (but it was the only header image that came to mind!)

So, what's this all about then?

Delivery.

So in an ideal world I would drop you a chapter a month. Nice and simple. But we all know that, despite my best intentions, I haven't exactly aced that now have I? Alright, the whole illness thing didn't help I know but even so.

I spent some time whilst I was away a few days working out rough render needs per scene (thankfully since it's all plotted this wasn't as hard as it may sound using some estimates) and out of the remaining chapters five of them are as big as Chapter Three and the remaining two are somewhat bigger.*

Excluding my illness and rabbit holes, Three was about six weeks work largely due to render time. Now with luck as we progress I should be able to upgrade my PC rig and cut this time down and, again with luck, maybe produce a chapter a month regardless of the size. But that is not only a lot of "if's" and "but's" but is in the future to boot. (this also assumes I don't keep adding more extra bits!)

So what to do about the next few chapters? This is where you all come in.

As most of you know, I don't like taking your money when I don't give you anything that month. (yes, I know...most of you think I'm an idiot for this) and so I'm completely at a loss on how to proceed in the short term. Two options have come to mind that I would like to discuss with you.

Firstly, until my rig is up to the job, I could release the chapters in two parts. If we say a chapter takes six weeks I could easily release a part each month with time to spare. The pro's of this is that you get something every month. Also it means I wouldn't keep chopping bits out as well I suspect so in the long run there would actually be more content. The downside of this is that the part chapters taken by themselves might feel unbalanced swinging from a plot heavy part to a naughty part and back again.

My second thought was just to release the chapter when it was done and look to ensure that you got something each month, even it was only a special standalone piece (for example those with long memories may well recall the one-off I did back in February).

BUT, I know I'm also a bit of a ditz and have probs overlooked a dozen other solutions.

So, I'm looking to you for help and thoughts. How do we best get over this short term bridge? I've done a small poll thingy down below but this isn't an absolute for a decision, it's more so I can capture your thoughts on the above two easily.

But I'm also open to ideas. This is as much your project as mine. So if you have any thoughts please throw them down in the comments or drop me a PM.

* Just a quickie on file size btw, I have this in hand and am experimenting this weekend. I've a solution for individual chapters that actually works (although it does have a small drawback) plus some very helpful chaps have come up with a way to reduce the image size even further but I need to check the quality of what comes out.

Do both perhaps?

Compression is all fine and well, but an uncompressed/lossless option would also appreciated. Greatly.

I'm happy just getting 1 chapter every two months, no stand-alones. It's worth waiting for a good product. I think Sunset Riders (Something Unlimited) does the same thing, and they have heaps of fans. Totally worth the wait for me. And, I prefer the time spent on stand-alones was instead invested on the main project, which we are emotionally invested in already, anyway. But as an artist, I understand you might want to try a bunch of different things, or else a single project can become boring and lead to a burnout.

Some people are always in there for the quick advantage, while there are better ways to do that, but I agree with the full chapters. I am in it for the development of a good game. Not for the bonusses, so if can do something nice as an extra fine. Let it not take too nuch away from development time though, Just be upfront about your schedules and we are all adult enough to decide which tier we feel comfortable at supporting at that schedule. :P

*aims to please!*

*breaks her own rule on not saying anything just yet* Mo Ko is right. Once I enabled up front I'm stuck with it. Originally, I didn't want up front but in I was getting too many peeps pledge, download and bugger off often within an hour that it was getting a bit depressing tbh.

P.S. Nice picture, made me giggle. :)

Yeah, like other commenters above me, I'm a hardcore member of the "release a full chapter whenever it's done" party. I don't like the idea of splitting chapters so much, it seems like playing half a chapter at a time would be a less satisfying experience. I would rather you just take the two months to release a full chapter the way you envisioned it, with everything you want in it. I'm much more concerned about the final product than the schedule. The schedule is just a rough roadmap thingy that's supposed to help us get from point A (no game) to point B (game). Sure, it's easier to stick around when the road is fun (which you make it with your delightful chattiness), but it's the quality of what we find in point B that I think really matters. Ultimately, what I want is that when all this is said and done I have an awesome game sitting in my "homework" folder that can remember a year or two later and go, "oh hey, Heavy Five was pretty awesome. Let's play that one again!" Regarding doing little one-offs each month to keep us entertained, I don't terribly mind the idea in theory, but for me personally it really isn't necessary, and I think it isn't worth it if it takes up noticeable development time. If you end up spending a week out of every month having to come up with some small side entertainment piece, I think it would be better to just save those weeks and get the chapter done sooner instead, since I'm really here for the game and not the one offs. I have been wondering for a little while why you haven't adopted the charge per release option. Since you're so adamant about not wanting to take money without delivering content, it seems like the natural built-in solution. That way you know that you'll only pry money out of our hands when the next chapter is released, and you can take your time to work on it guilt free and make it as good as you want it to be. If what Ma Ko said is true though and you just can't switch to pay-per-release once the upfront payment is enabled, then... Good god, who are these silly ditzes running Patreon?

I think you got a very good idea there! I'm gonna expand on that a bit. I think Bored Pilot could be done monthly! So there could be a standard Bored Pilot that's part of each chapter and on the off months standalone PDF Bored Pilot for all tiers that get the game. I think it's a fantastic extra, so having more of those would only be welcome. Dear Eye in the Sky QA every month? Yes please! :)

Once you enable charge up front it's permanent and cannot be changed.

Did patreon get rid of the charge per release option? If you are insistent on not taking money without providing something, that seems like the best option. that way you could take as long as you need and only charge when you've released the most recent update.

Guys, thanks so far. I'm not going to reply to any of these yet until as many as poss have had they say so expect me to stay on the quiet side of this debate for a bit!

Nottravisgames

I have to agree with most here. I will take quality over quantity any day. Take the time you need to provide a novel you are happy and proud of. As long as you can provide us with updates on how it's going. =D

Wolvy

So yeah, I'm in the queue again for the freebies... No? Well then I have nothing else to add, nor anyone to disagree with. :)

Was gonna launch into a long speech with many well-argumented points, but I read my esteemed Patron colleagues answers first, and... Basically, what they said. ;-))

Sulring Durgul

I also think you should just focus on creating the game the way you want and making something you are proud of and not worry too much about how long it takes.

Yes, I'm not afraid to call her silly, but she certainly is no ditz! In re: paragraphs - [SHIFT]+[ENTER] You're welcome :)

Full chapters, please. And stop it with the refunds, silly. We're supporting the artist - that what patrons do. Support the artist so they can focus on their art. If you stop with the refunds, you'll be able to upgrade your rig sooner, which is a big win for everyone.

I'm enclined to agree with my fellow patrons, you could take as long as you need to release something you're proud of. As long as you don't keep us in the dark, I don't mind waiting (well, actually, I do mind as I'd give my first born to Cthulhu to play the whole game right now). I vote option 4: Release full chapter once they're done, and if it took more than a month, then so be it. That bein said, for the sake of your poll, I'll vote option 2. You thought the game as separate chapters, if you split them up, it will lose too much meaning.

Huitieme

I'm here to support a developer, not to get a release every month. How about this: You work on a full chapter at a time, and release it when it's ready. If this takes longer than a month, so be it. But If you really feel guilty about not releasing anything that month, then maybe release a PDF copy of BP for patrons or something? Alternatively... Stop being ridiculous and take our money; we wouldn't be here if we didn't want to support you!

TotesNotThea

OK, I don't like the poll for it's terribly rude and untrue to call you a silly ditz. Therefore, it's results could be misleading. :) However, I like the other options less because a) I know you want to do complete chapters, b) I don't like one off to be mandatory for you to do. I'll send you a PM, because I can't make paragraphs here and it irks me. :)

Or and hear me out here you could work on a chapter for 6 weeks or and then release it when it’s done and I am sure no one here will complain especially as seeing how chatty you are as well as how well you keep us up to date on what’s going
