Thank you for your patience whilst I took a few days to recharge and clear my head. Thank you also for your kind words. I won't repeat my wailing and gnashing of teeth over my lack of thinking consequences through and will just crack on.
However, one good thing does seem to have come out of this mess of mine - and that's to do with chapter downloads. In asking around for solutions on the compressing animation size, someone suggested something that might solve the image overwrite issue.
Y'see what I want to be able to do is just have it to that people download the latest chapter not the whole thing (hence why I'm freaking out over size at the moment). There are, essentially, two components when you make a Renpy file. The code and the images. I'm completely happy with the way the code updates for separate chapter downloads, and it works with earlier saves and everything and nothing breaks so huzzah. A tick in the box.
On the images however, Renpy just assumes that you're replacing any original images with the new ones and so merrily overwrites any existing images. This means you can't replay the game. But, I think I have the answer. I'll leave it there for now, as I want to get Three out of the door but will come back to this next week once I've trialled something.
