✧ The making of - 'Leer'

Can't say much about the idea behind this piece, except the mood we were going for. Something chill and nonchalant, with a bit of familiar, almost homely blues behind it. Apartment block yard felt like a perfect place to bring into the loop, and autumn, initially envisioned as a bleak one, was meant to emphasize the overall dreary feeling of the piece. As well as a cigarette in the character's mouth, of course.

We started by taking a couple of photos of ourselves in various poses, just to figure out the angle we wanted to go with. Then sketched the character sitting on the bench, and buried ourselves in all sorts of references for the yard. The final background is a mix of bashed photos and freehand painting.

When the YCH was won by sibeyIII , they provided us with a great idea for the brightly colored hoodie their lapine character was meant to be wearing, and this shifted our whole perspective on the piece. By the end of the coloring process it was clear that we needed to add some warmth to the scene, as to compliment the yellow hoodie, and to clash two contradictory ideas - sun rays shining on an otherwise bleak yard, a yellow hoodie warming up the body of a brooding young male, and a morose look on his otherwise gentle face. The change that happened to the piece from there felt as if the whole story took place withing the drawing process of just one frame. And this, all in itself, was a rewarding experience for us.

I hope you find the transformation this picture went through as noteworthy as we did. Please share your thoughts, if you have them, in the comments down below. Did you like a grayish version better? Or did we make the right choice by adding some warmth to the piece?

Thank you and let's stay in touch!~

I like both versions, but the warm color touch up you added to it makes it really stand out! The highlights on the shoulders especially completes this piece so well! :)
