Studying distinguished pieces helps an artist to effectively expand their visual library and gain understanding of the subject. Choose an image that really inspires you, or has something that your own works lack and need, and try to reproduce it by eye. Focus on specific aspects you want to incorporate into your art, be it composition, anatomy or even brushwork. Stop when you feel you've got it. Repeat the process several times, and you will see great improvement in your own art!
(And if you feel like sharing the results, be sure to mention that this was a study, not your original piece! Credit the author of original piece when possible.)
