Be picky with your references! A poorly lit photo won't give you proper insights on what good lighting is, and an ill-considered anatomy reference won't do much but confuse you.
Keep your aesthetic preferences in mind while hunting for sources of inspiration, build your visual library and good taste over time, and try to surround yourself only with quality you'd be proud to see in your own works.
(Note: Never use references as is! Pick only what you need and provide the rest, so your art is original!)
