PATREON EXCLUSIVE: Star Wars Holiday Special Watchalong

You guys.

Someone said "don't expect this to be good." And yet I was not prepared.

Someone else said "make sure you have a lot of wine ready." And yet I was not prepared.

YouTube commenters said things like "why are you watching it?" and "don't watch it!" And yet I was not prepared.

Nothing... NOTHING could have prepared me for the Star Wars Holiday Special.

And nothing will get the faces of Chewie's family members staring longingly into each others' eyes out of my nightmares.

This reaction was a bit of a mess for the following reasons:
- The version I found on YouTube had two scenes missing, the Jefferson Starship song and the cartoon scene. This is probably due to copyright seems those scenes were officially released, unlike the rest of the special. I'll watch them on a later video.
- The version I found had YouTube ads. So I had to cut them out of the reaction. This is why you'll notice a few "jump cuts" here and there.

Since ads appear on different parts of the video for different people, I found this version on a Google Drive so we can watch along together:

So grab a snack and a drink and join me as I get progressively drunker and I navigate this bizarre adventure.

Happy Life Day everybody!

"Postcards from the Edge" is a semi-autobiographical novel by Carrie Fisher, first published in 1987. It was later adapted by Fisher herself into a motion picture of the same name, which was directed by Mike Nichols and released by Columbia Pictures in 1990.

This reaction was a Life Day miracle. Btw, Life Day is November 17 (the date 11/17/78 that the special appeared on TV only once, ever). The short story is this was a way to keep audiences happy and interested in the franchise during the hiatus between Star Wars (A New Hope 1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Imagine there were only 3 major networks on TV, no cable or home video and Star Wars was out of cinemas. This was only shown the one time and yes, the reaction was... let's say negative lol. None of the cast wanted any part of it. Celebrities such as Bea Arthur (one of The Golden Girls later on) and Harvey Korman (famous for The Carol Burnett Show) were basically told, hey come be in a Star Wars special. Given the immense popularity and groundbreaking achievement Star Wars was...plus it was a paycheck. Also there were toys to sell. Lots and lots of merchandise. Believe me, I was talking my parents into buying me everything. Cocktails got you through it. I'm proud of you young Padawan but you are not a Jedi yet. I tell people, you're not a true Star Wars fan unless you experience this Holiday Special at least once. You're right, at the time this had nothing to do with the story or the movies. Just pimping everyone to sell more crap. Life Day itself is now finally considered an official part of the Star Wars lore but that's only within the past couple of years. I can't explain things too much because it could be slightly spoiler-ish lol. Carrie Fisher was the daughter of the Legendary Debbie Reynolds so she always followed in her mother's footsteps. Acting, singing, playwriting etc. Tragically, Debbie died one day after the passing of Carrie.
