So so sad to hear ST was on the yacht scene.

(And of course we know now that Diana did give Morton the info. I always figured she did, somehow. A friend gave him her notes or tapes or something.) Also I think part of Lady C's distaste for Diana is, she first hired Lady C to write her story. But Diana needed a hagiography (puff piece, 100 % loyal to Diana) and Lady C was going to write both sides of it. So Diana hired Morton and Lady C, it seems to me, didn't forgive that. But Diana HAD TO have a hagiography. Her own mother went up against the British nobility and got destroyed in court and lost custody. Diana was going up against the Royal Family and all its protectors. The public was the only Ace she held, apart from being a future king's mother. She had to win over the public sympathy completely, so she'd be fairly treated or the royals would lose public face. There was no way the book could contain what Lady C eventually wrote about Diana.

Andrew Morton's book about Diana is where the story was first told, I think. The story goes that Charles was nicer to Diana than ever, while she was pregnant with Harry, because he thought it was a girl. She didn't say yes or no, so he took that as a yes. He hadn't always been that warm to her, apparently, so she didn't want it to end. I'm sure she also wanted to avoid stress during pregnancy. For the baby's sake, it's best to avoid stress. Embattled couples even sometimes miscarry. The story went, Diana had given birth to a son of course, and Charles allegedly stood bedside and told her "Oh, it's a boy. And he even has rusty hair, like your family." And left? What a thing to say to a woman who has just punched a human out of her system. (Paraphrasing The Great Santini there.) Is that not callous? Oh and the story continued, Diana said "Something inside me died that day." From then on she felt the marriage was over. (She still kept trying...hope dies hard.) I think Diana believed in love and romance but even she eventually gave up.
