It wasnβt like everyone involved was walking around with active radiation poisoning symptoms - they were given some protection. It might be a John Wayne movie you were thinking of - my dad mentioned to me that Wayne shot a film in the same general area later on and many on the film died from cancer which is why my dad wasnβt surprised when he got it later also.
