What I read (can't remember where) about the Man in the Iron (Black Velvet?) Mask, was, he had an affair with a woman who was the King's favorite. Because the man had used his angelic face to woo her, he was sentenced not only to prison and obscurity, with everything he had confiscated, but his face was hidden for the rest of his life, so that even he could not admire it. So the man could never again be praised or admired for his beauty.
