The clock ticked quietly in the corner of the office, the only sound competing with the scratch of my pen against paper.
Two case files lay open before me—both, I had selected from the hands of Cameron Dennis himself.
For someone like him to trust me without worry meant one thing—expectations. High ones.
I leaned back in my chair, stretching slightly as I reviewed the evidence trail for the first case.
It was a Theft Case and the numbers, names, statements show a clear path to victory. I just have to meet the victim and the suspect and put them under my Sharingan and get the truth of what happened so I don't punish an innocent person by mistake.
I had an advantage that no one else did that helped me sparing the innocent to be heart
I put it aside and moved on to the second case which was a Robbery Case of some Jewel store but then my focus was yanked elsewhere — my HUD lit up and a soft pulse on the system phone, invisible to everyone but me.
A message from an Unknown sender.
I raised an eyebrow.
Apart from John, no one else could reach me through that channel.
I told Eve to open the message.
“Hello, Mr. Harper. My name is Natasha. John Wick told me you’re looking for an investigator to work with.”
Of course. So that’s who John meant…
John Wick — calm, direct, and deliberate as always.
I remembered my conversation with him. When I had asked if he’d ever consider joining me for long-term corporation, he’d simply refused saying he wanted to spend most of his time with his wife and will help in his leisure time
I respect that and John deserves his happiness, looks like she was the referral John was talking about.
[She must be skilled to get John’s approval, can't wait to meet her, wonder if she has a dangerous vibe] Eve’s tone carried a faint hint of curiosity.
“I know, Eve,” I murmured, smiling faintly. “But if John’s the one who sent her, we’re fine.”
I typed back: “Yes, I’m indeed looking for a full-time investigator. When and where would you like to meet?”
Her response came instantly. “There’s a 24-hour diner near XXXXXX XXXX. Midnight works?”
Of course it had to be that diner — the one where I’d first met John, back when I took the DA’s office job.
It was also where Deborah, the soft-spoken waitress from Baby Driver movie , worked the late shifts. The place had a strange way of pulling threads from every world into one corner of New York.
[Oh, this will be interesting. I’m curious how she’ll perform compared to John Wick.]
Eve’s voice carried a note of excitement, like a student anticipating a new experiment.
I just smiled. “You’ll see soon enough.”
I sent a confirmation text to Natasha — “Midnight Works. See you there.”
— and returned to my files, the faint hum of anticipation lingering in the air.
Later That Evening
The gavel had barely dropped when the judge announced the verdict.
Another win. First case of the day — closed. Cameron Dennis would be pleased.
I stepped out of the courthouse into the evening chill, adjusting my tie when my phone buzzed — the normal one this time.
Beth Potts, my assistant. Efficient, sharp, and just exasperated enough to keep me grounded.
“Liam, the Chairman of NutraGenix just called. He wants to meet you.”
“NutraGenix?” I repeated, frowning slightly. “I just won a case against their CEO. He’s sitting in a prison cell right now.”
“That’s why I thought it was strange,” Beth admitted. “They sounded… urgent and very respectful. Should I set it a meeting or refuse?”
I thought for a moment. Curiosity outweighed caution.
“Let’s see what this is about. Won the case and there is nothing else for me to do today. Inform them I’m on my way right now. Tell them I’ll come to their office myself.”
“Got it. Oh, and congratulations on the win — though I’m guessing that robbery case was barely a warm-up for you after Hale's trial.”
I chuckled softly. “You know me too well. Send me the address.”
Within minutes, I was straddling my bike, the city buildings blurring past as Beth’s text pinged in.
NutraGenix Corporate HQ – The Arclight Tower, Midtown. They own five floors.
The Arclight Tower – NutraGenix Headquarters
The building stood like a mirror of the sunlight in the day, the outer glass was polished to shine and quiet the view.
The NutraGenix logo glowed faintly across the entrance — clean, modern, deceptive.
As I walked up the marble steps, the glass doors parted automatically.
A small welcoming party waited inside — A guy in glasses, flanked by a few executives, all smiles and practiced warmth.
“Mr. Harper,” the guy in glasses greeted, extending his hand. “It’s an honor to have you here on such short notice. I’m Lucas Trent, Newly Appointed Vice President of NutraGenix.”
“Pleasure’s mine,” I replied, shaking his hand firmly. “You mentioned your chairman wanted to meet personally?”
“Yes,” Lucas nodded, his voice smooth but nervous. “He specifically requested the set the meeting at your convenience.”
“It’s fine, i was in the neighborhood" I replied
“This way, please.” he showed the way
We entered the elevator. The mirrored walls reflected quiet unease — his, not mine.
The display climbed: 10th… 15th… 20th floor.
The doors slid open to a floor that radiated quiet luxury.
Dark walnut paneling. Soft ambient lighting.
A long hallway lined with abstract art that probably cost more than most people’s houses.
At the end of the hall stood a pair of massive glass doors — and about twenty men in black suits, earpieces glinting under the lights.
As soon as they saw me, one of them pressed his earpiece and murmured,
“Mr. Harper has arrived.”
I slowed slightly, eyes scanning the formation. ‘That was… excessive.’
[Twenty guards for a supplement company chairman? Liam, be carful] Eve reminded but i was already vigilant
This was too much security and this Chairman was not some Big Big shot
“I was thinking the same thing,” I muttered under my breath. “Unless this guy’s hiding something a lot bigger than vitamins.”
Then the glass doors opened.
Two men stepped out.
The first — a confident man in his forties, sharp suit, authoritative presence — the NutraGenix chairman himself.
But the second man beside him… his very posture carried a familiar gravity.
Slicked hair, impeccable style, and the unmistakable air of brilliance and charm yet a bit of arrogance intertwined.
I’d seen that face in newspapers, interviews, and countless documentaries.
[Howard Stark.] Eve said
And just like that, the puzzle deepened.
‘How is Tony Stark’s dad involved with NutraGenix?’
Oh…now this meeting just became significantly more interesting.
