Change Artstyle

Hello everyone!

Today I was browsing some other artists work and stumbled on a recent launch by Artisan Guild, so I compared the model with one I did.

Looking at my most recent models, especially female Elves (Dark Ranger and Conquest) It's possible to see that their bodies are too thin, of course for an Elf that makes sense but for a miniature, I think they look small.

The truth is I am not happy with my current art style, I still have lots to improve. As an Artist, I think that this is only natural to wish to improve every day. I still have the goal to produce better and faster.

But regardless of what I wish, your opinion is super important to me.

What I am aiming for? To sculpt miniatures for tabletop on 32mm scale that are neither too realistic nor too Stylized, but something in between.

Examples of realistic models: Loot studios and Flesh of the Gods

Examples of Stylized or maybe heroic: Artisan Guild and Hero forge

I am asking this because, probably next month we will have the Sun Fury Camp, so I will be making a bunch of Elves, and of course, I want to improve.

My proposal is to increase the heads a little bit, not too much (to make better-printed details and also help painting). For the body, increase the size of the hands, and the thickness of some body parts.

As feedback, I was told that I should improve my face, and I do think the same. I will practice more faces and improve.

If you have other feedback, please leave it in the comments.

If you don't wish for elves or haven't voted, there are 8 days remaining to vote for the next theme.

Thanks! It's not a matter of motivation I love miniatures every style and type (Sci fi, fantasy, heroic, realistic and anime) but, I think that each of them has a proper size to work nicely. What I aiming for it's to increase a little bit the presence of the miniature and make it a bit more resistant, I could solve this by increasing from 32mm to 35mm but that would make those miniatures so different from my previous models. I will adjust the proportions a bit, on the month report I will present the comparison between old and new models.

Give it a go IMO. If you're not happy with your work you're gonna lose motivation. I love your style but i also love the Artisan Guild scale. They are a lot of fun to paint and my players love to be able to see expression and "motion" in those. They like your models too ofc, don't worry :)

also re: contest, I will enter, barring a major injury or act of God. I am just a very busy extreme procrastinator who generally does everything in the last available time frame. :)

I say go for it. It seems like you want to. Some people are really specific about scale on the tabletop. I, as a DM am much more forgiving. As long as the base generally fits a 1 inch grid, then 25-35mm is all ok to me. From the painting point of view, slightly larger faces are always welcome for me. I dont love the more "cartoony" art style from heroforge, but the balance Andrea from ArtisanGuild is able to find is great for me. Bite the Bullet (probably my favorite scultor overall goes a little bigger with 35mm scale and they still look great on tabletop (though I will admit I rarely use their bases as they are larger than 1 inch) and are pleasant to paint.

Even more reason for me to get one done! I want to paint a dreadlord but I'm worried I'll take too long, so just picking which one I think I can get done well enough in a short amount of time

I think the weapons are in a good thickness except Hammers, those tend to break easily on my hands. Yeah I was getting worried that until now no one has presented a miniature to the contest. Today I saw someone working so it made me happy. I was afraid to announce that no one had painted a miniature.

Yeah I have definitely noticed that for your females - and agree the hands/weapons (for some!) are smaller than I'd like - Magma Knight is awesome! but some of the night elf style models have some tiny hands and smaller weapons than I thought they would be looking at the renders. Excited to see what you come up with - the Dreadlords and DragonGuard models are already big models so theyve been perfect for me - I still need to pick something for the painting competition - and I just checked and saw it closes on the 25th!! I thought it was October sometime but thats the results! ~ oooo picking something now XD

Thanks! Yeah, I want to experiment but I don't intend to go exactly all the way to Heroic. The reason I chose 32mm scale was to add a bit more detail but not exactly going for a Heroic. The thing that I am most bothered about is my females being too thin and delicate.

I love heroic scale as its much more fun to paint - also allows for more variety in the sculpts, I would have happily voted for 'keep it the same' as I love all your stuff, but I prefer heroic and you said you weren't happy with it and gave me the impression you wanted to experiment - do it!

Mini Manatee

I voted to change. True scale is just too delicate in my opinion.

I was not thinking about that but, thanks! I wish to keep in the middle gray zone.

On the Render, the difference is visible if you place one mine and one AG on a build plate right off the bat it's possible to see that the AG head and hands are bigger when printed, this difference is not that visible, for painting the face this small increase might help. On Male characters, I don't find problems with my prints but my 32mm females lack a bit more volume, at least that's what I think.

I understand Ivo! In that case I'm all for your "tweeking"! Cheers!

I like the current art style. However, I'm voting for the change. - I'm subscribed to studios that use true scale (i.e., Flesh of Gods, Clay Cyanide, Printomancer, and Mammoth Factory). - I'm also subscribed to studios that use heroic scale (i.e., Artisan Guild, RN Estudio, and Bite the Bullet - 35mm). I find that true scale is great for that classic feel without being too cartoony. However, since I'm a merchant of those studios, it can lead to some overlaps when it comes to particular races/classes. Heroic scale is also great (more forgiving for those who are new to painting, thicker parts to mitigate damage, and details can readily be seen). That being said, being too cartoony will make some models look goofy. I believe you're talented and skilled enough that your designs can still stand out. Plus, once I switch to the merchant tier, you'll have both true scale and heroic scale offerings (hobbyists will have more to choose from).

Thanks!

Thanks for the comment!

I do not wish to go to Heroic, just a little bit, maybe 3-5% bigger head, it might not even be noticeable. I also don't wish to change the style in a drastic manner that is completely different from my past models. I still wish to keep in the middle between Heroic and Realistic, the problem here is to find the perfect balance if you mix black and white there are lots of gray tones to find.

Can you please try to visualise the changes? For example, I had no issue with your models next to Artisan stuff which we mainly use for our sessions, so I cant really imagine how impactful the change would be.

Honestly Ivo - I'd keep your art style and the proportions as they are. I'm not a fan of the over-stylized approaches from other designers and I find your take on keeping it more "realistic" quite refreshing. Of course I understand the pain wanting to increase head sizes to add more details but in the advent of 8k resin printers I think we're good were we are. But as always I'll accept the opinion of the majority! Cheers!

I really like your stuff, pretty sure I’ve been with you since the beginning of this year at least. You do a great job. I voted for the change simply because in general I prefer the more heroic proportions because they are easier to paint and I can keep them closer to 32mm scale. For realistic minis I end up reprinting them 10-20% larger before I am satisfied with the details on the face.
