Imagine Minis First Painting Contest: Rules of Engagement

Hello everyone!

Before I start the topic a quick update: N'zull The Defiler is now printing. It took me a bit longer to make the supports because this miniature is a bit more complex, once I show the renders you will understand. After trying to hollow the model I decided not to, the weight difference was not that big and It left some space inside the model, meaning that it could crack once completely cured. If your software has a volume blocker you probably will be able to do it. This miniature is big and filled all my Elegoo Mars 2 Pro Buildplate (Body, wings,  Hand options, and Base). It will take 13h to finish printing at 0.02mm layer.

Let's back to the Painting Contest. This is not the official Painting Contest post, but so that I can hear your opinion on the rules

To make a painting contest I think that some rules are appreciated so that everyone can be on the same level.

First of All, Prize: I think that is very important to have a reward for the effort. I will go with the Last post suggestion, 1 month of subscription, I don't know how others do this but I will figure it out, I can make a refund to the person (that's what I currently know). I can also add your name and a Phrase on my main page (2nd place will also receive this).

Who can Participate: Subscribers (Patreon, Tribes, and Apoia) or should I open it to the Public?

What miniatures can be inscribed: Limiting a collection might help people paint only the newer models. What do you think?

Should kitbash be allowed? I do like the idea of kitbashes and customs, I think is reasonable that the main part of the miniature can be used, and hands from other sculptors. You can use any additional piece that you manually or 3d printed for your miniature. The designer of the parts should be referenced.

Time? I want to do this regularly but I don't want it to look like something trivial, so 4 months between Contests ok? The application for the contest should be 2 months from the announcement?

Judges? How should we judge this? I think that me judging your paints can be too subjective or might even be biased, should I run a Instagram poll?

If it's an Instagram poll, is it ok to make a 1x1 duel until the end? You lost you go fight for the 3rd place. Or should I make it like soccer 4 miniatures will be grouped together and face each other (1x1) and the 2 most voted go to a 1x1 duel, loose get out?

That's it for now, If you have more information to share, or comments, please leave them below.

Let's make it happen!

Best regards,

Ivo

Thanks! Limiting the most recent sculpts is interesting because it gives people choices and also helps to advertise a bit more the newer models (That in theory are better than the first ones). Designing a miniature is kind of cool, I think I can add it as a Patron Commission to the winner. That might even be one miniature to be available for free to the next contest. Yeah even though others prefer a closed Painting contest, I think that you are right, making it public might be more publicity for me. I think that I can manage to do both, one closed and one open, on the closed I will open to Large/Huge commission, and on the open a 32mm medium as 1st place reward.

I dont know what is best, of the various STL creators I have followed I have seen many different approaches. Every 3-4 months seems the most favorable to me, the way BtB does it is every 3 months and all models from those months are available to enter. As much as I like subscribers only as it increases my chances to win (lol) I think as the real goal here is publicity and exposure for Imagine, so opening up to anyone will in theory both give you STL sales and your merchants print sales of people who want to enter. I think judging should ultimately be up to you, but I also think that a committee of 3 or so to get some more input is always a positive. I generally enter for the challenge and not necessarily the prize, but I will also throw out there that Twin Goddess' prize is to help them design a sculpt for an upcoming release and this is by far my favorite prize, because it is just so fun and inspiring. Maybe something to think of in the future if your contests gain in popularity, as I also think having such a cool prize will inspire more people to enter, which in turn gets your name out there more!

Thanks! Those are great ideas

Who can Participate: I think only your subscribers should be able to join, as it helps to build the community within the subscriber base What miniatures: I think you should have two categories, one for the last month and one for 'all' as this will encourage people to paint the new stuff and also not discourage people from painting the old stuff now that they have a renewed reason to do so. Should kitbash be allowed? in my opinion it should be your miniatures, kitbash between your other releases sure, but not from other designers (bases / diorama doesnt matter, just the mini should be 100% yours) Time: I'm used to 1 month time frames, but 2 months is also good - whichever you select, the models for the 'recent' category should be from the previous X months Judges: i think you should judge it. As again, I think this helps build the community, bringing in outside judges only makes it more intimidating for people who dont consider themselves as great painters - i think the more casual these events are the better as it will allow for more entries which is the main thing! Alternatively you could judge the first one, then colab with the winner/s of the previous competition/s to judge the next round etc, as this would further help build the community. Or community voting also works! as same deal, builds the community, I just personally find a smaller judging pool to be better.

I sory not only Patreon, Patron your sub. hmm 1. Announcement of the competition 2nd month for painting 3rd month for elimination 4. Give me my winnings because I will win anyway :) you can add a month to paint, but rather eliminations should go fairly quickly

Thanks! Only Patreon I think it's too severe, I have other subscribers' Platforms, that maybe someone from there can paint and wishes to participate. I think I will go with only subscribers (regardless of the platform. Kitbashes only from mine seem cool. How much time do you think it's a good time?

1. Only Patreon, no discussion 2, Only your mini 3. Your work must be in the foreground. Or they can be kitbashes, but only from your models. This does not include the stand and the surrounding area 4. Is ok you have time and we have time :) 5. Find out what the ranked eliminations look like in Esport. a pair of 1x1 groups and a pyramid from both until the final.

I was thinking on a whole collection to choose from. But 1 free model could be fun to do. I think it's unfair to turn Gelvain into a free miniature and everyone paints the Dreadlords. I think that having 2 or 3 minis to chose from might be cool, since sometimes you might not like what I pick

I like the idea of it being open to the public and to paint a specific model, that way everyone gets a model for free and it may encourage folk to subscribe etc. Current subscribers get access to the commission requests and polls etc, we get a great service from you, I'd definitely like to see something like this try and claw in new faces.

I can arrange some people, not experts in painting to watch and vote for miniatures. But it's true that making a complex duel between miniatures might take them too long. Tagging previous winners as Judges might be cool but doing so might take them out of the contest. Well, I had a crazy idea, I poll Patreon entries for Tribes and I poll Tribes+Apoia on Patreon, then I pick 5 friends as judges to select from the 4 most voted 2 here and 2 from there.

You judging the results may be subjective but I can't think of anyone more qualified to say whether a rendition of a model matches (or exceeds) your vision. Public polls can be manipulated and arranging a panel of judges takes too much time and effort to be worth it. Maybe you could tag previous winners as judges during later painting contests?
