File Management (Merchant POV)
Added 2021-11-29 21:10:24 +0000 UTCHello everyone,
Today one of my Patrons from Brazil asked to organize my files from now on. Since I don't have a subscription to other Patrons I don't know how they organize their files or how to organize mine better. After he showed me the mess that it is to set up the whole store starting from scratch, I finally understood his point of view.
So from now on, every miniature will have only one ZIP containing a folder with the model name with STL files inside and one render without background. Depending on the model complexity I will create subfolders inside the folder with the model name.
Regarding naming convention:
He didn't ask for anything but I think that after I started Defenders of the Glade, I have been placing the following name for miniatures of the theme: DOTG_Modelname_Pose/Variation
I will also do this for patron commission: PC_Modelname
For loyalty reward: will be LR_Modelname
I know that everyone has a different way of organizing files but I think this is better than what I am doing.
Does anyone have another request/suggestion or comment to improve this file management?
Best regards,
Ivo

2021-11-29 22:56:38 +0000 UTCGreat idea! I was thinking of a more refined way but "X" solves the problem. On the sentinel would be X_Extras and X_HandOptions. The X is the first letter so it's easy to organize alphabetically, they will be together.
2021-11-29 21:50:20 +0000 UTCThat's a very good point. I think each miniature having a folder would help. Maybe a note that if you have "X" model already then the items are the same? Then as you suggested we can make the choice as to which to keep and how to organize.
2021-11-29 21:39:25 +0000 UTCI agree with the stored space but this one should be tricky to solve. Let's say in January I will release mounted Sentinel pose 2 and unmounted. The weapons will be the same, except the unmounted that I intend to create a 2hand spear option. So every miniature should have a folder containing hand options. Does adding a folder with hand options helps? This way once the folder is duplicate people can delete.
2021-11-29 21:31:53 +0000 UTCI will position parts according to that. To sculpt I leave them in the Zero of the world but from now on I will reposition the file before exporting. Thanks for letting me know.
2021-11-29 21:24:35 +0000 UTCI think the naming scheme will definitely help in the long run. I would also suggest a way of organizing shared pieces. For example, in the latest elven rider model there are several shared pieces between the wild and armored mount version of the saber. I also noticed there was a separate download for the elf, that the hands were both included with the elf and separately, but I had no way of knowing until after I'd downloaded. I love the ability to re-use pieces, but I want to make the best use of space as well so that I don't have the same piece stored multiple times.
2021-11-29 21:23:14 +0000 UTCThe only thing that I would request is that when files are saved, they keep their origin location the same so that if I import them into an application such as blender they stay where they belong rather than everything being centered on the origin. I do my own renders and it is much easier to just import and scale rather than trying to place all parts digitally
