Curiosity Leads Twi To Stats

So after all this blow back with Tumblr and the supposed mass amounts of people jumping ship, I was curious as to how this has effected episode traffic.  I've personally felt traffic and notes have been below normal since about Monday.  So I decided to look at some early stats and learned some things in the process.

According to Alexa, Adorkable Twilight & Friends Tumblr is the 160,001st most popular site in the US. ;-)  403,865th globally.  Even cooler, we are rising on each statistic.  That is awesome, lol!  But the stats also shared with me other pony related comics and blogs such as TJ Pones and others... I had no idea Adorkable Twilight had much more traffic than them, but we get far less notes.  Interesting.

Oh!  So I guess you came to see how much our traffic has declined since Monday... well it had declined but not as much as I thought yet. It is down roughly 10% from a normal week. I will continue to monitor it. It stinks to see a decline, because so far for the year we are up 26% to 40% depending on what info you are looking at.

On average we get about 770 visitors a day which is in the upper 10% of blogs on Tumblr.  I didn't know that.  We get about 16,500-20,000 views a month.

Most of our visitors are from the United States, Mexico, Russia, and Canada.

If I was collecting money from ad revenue on Adorkable Twilight (which I am not, all that I guess goes to Tumblr) the site makes about $2,500.00 a month! Thats crazy!  Adblockers block about $300.00 a year and block over 30,000 page views a year to Adorkable Twilight.

So take these stats with a grain of salt, but it was interesting... at least to me. I tried to share the stats as accurately as possible.  If I am incorrect on something I will fix it.  Hopefully we won't see a bigger drop of users.  It's sad seeing people you talk to leave.

Next update we will probably talk about our Christmas games.

So I decided to check the latest stats I have and as of early Thursday Dec 6th, our decline in average viewership has improved. Instead of a 10% drop, we are now 9.52%. Within the margin of error too. We also improved out national ranking to the 159,391st most viewed website in the USA. ;-) We're getting close to the top ten, I can feel it.

So yes, I did take the deviation into account. It's hard to take a three day sample size as I did and apply it as "Fact." The traffic is 10% down from the normal standard of traffic. So as an example if we use really simple numbers... if there were 100 visitors on average, the visitor total dropped to 90 in the few days I sampled from. I can up date you again at the end of the week if it interests you. :)

You are missing 99% of everything. The comic has a regularly scheduled episode release Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I rarely if ever put the episodes here on Patreon. Patreon is sort of just a supplement to the main series with extra information and some doodles. I wonder if I can attach an RSS feed here? I think our Tumblr already has an RSS feed option.

What's the standard deviation on traffic, though? I don't know the proper way to calculate that for something that's increasing over time, but there certainly are people who do know. I suppose you'd model it as a smooth trend (fitted to the data) plus Gaussian noise, but for example does the noise scale proportionally to the average traffic or keep the same scale over time? Is there a general procedure for that or do you just adjust all your noise parameters ad hoc to fit the observed noise?

I mainly keep up with the comic through the updates you make here on patreon, although I guess i am missing the majority of them this way. An RSS feed or something would be neat, I dunno.

Same here. I actually never knew Tumblr had ads because I used Adblock. I had no idea they were making so much money off me. ;-) It was eye opening.

I use addblock because screw Tumblr makeing $ off of me. I like patron so much better it allows me to support the artist directly.
