Evolution of a Portrait
Added 2017-03-24 04:11:13 +0000 UTCAt center is the developed grisaille sketch done by Joyce Lawrence, who is an incredible portraitist and a wonderful instructor. She has been painting portraits for the last 4-5 years, and has only begun teaching about a year or so ago.
When it comes to seeing and translating form, Joyce is like an engineer. Even I am learning as I sit for her sessions and listen while she critiques and lectures her students. Her sense of understanding shape, line, light, shadow, and tone, are all impressively masterful. I am always glad to be her subject.
Attached are some behind the scenes images of the portraits as they develop. Two more sessions to go. Included is the next phase of this very portrait after only a 20 minute demonstration and color application. Enjoy.
