Here's the chorus part from our collab with Starcadian. The guitar is all about holding down the bottom of these thick, powerful chords.
Not a whole lot to say on this one, if you've played power chords before then you have the basic technique and knowledge to play this part. There are a few particular things I'll make notes on though:
- There's a high up 3 chord shot in the middle, across strings 2-4. It's nice to put some muted strokes in between these to make it sound looser in contrast to the earlier power chords (I do this in the video).
- With the slower moving power chords, only use downstrokes if you can manage it. They tend to sound more balanced and powerful.
- There's a common trick here where you have a power chord spanning 3 frets instead of the usual 2. This creates an inverted chord. To get into the theory here would be too dense, but basically, usually a power chord is named after it's lower note. So if the bottom note is C, then it's a C power chord. But these inverted 3 fret power chords make the highest note the root note. So if the highest note is F, then it's an F power chord.
- Of course, put some overdrive on your guitar to make it nice and crunchy. I'm using a Marshall sound here, which is very punchy and in-your-face. The bridge pickup works best for this style of playing.
