Legendary Space Knight (2nd Section)

This one was written by my friend, Phobos I during his peak years. If you witnessed the guitar lesson I taught him on stream last week, you'll understand me when I say that his chops have been in a state of steep decline lately. It only feels right now that I pay some tribute to his former glory days. One can only hope he'll eventually rediscover his stride!

We looked at another section from this tune a few months back, so check that one out to find the perfect companion to today's riff.

TAB is attached as a PDF and Guitar Pro file. Refer to that to learn this, but I will break down some of the isolated shapes and describe them in this post. Feel free to drop and questions or comments below.

...

Conceptually, you will basically be alternating between low palm muted notes, and rhythmic chord accents on strings 2, 3, and 4. The chords can be broken down as follows:

---------------------------
--7-----3-----3-----3----
--7-----4-----2-----4----
--7-----5-----2-----5----
--x-----0-----x------0----
--7-----------3-----------

The names of these are: Bm7, G/A, G6/9, G/A

Again, the lowest note of each chord will be palm muted, and the 3 notes on top will be played open.  Note that at the end of measure 5 when the riff is about to start over, I walk up chromatically to the 7th fret on the low E string, and it repeats the first 2 chord shapes.

Then, at the end of the riff (measure 8) I go all the way down to the open low E string and play the following shapes:

-------------------------------
-------------------------------
-------------------------------
--0----0----0-----------------
--2----0----2---7---8---9----
--0----2----3---5---6---7----

The names of these chords are: Em7, D/F#, G, A, Bb, Bm

The first 3 of these chords have each string / note played seprately - string 6, 5, then 4.

The last 3 power chords each require one stroke.

After this, the riff pretty much repeats starting on measure 10. We divert away from it a little early though, and when the low shapes come back we do a quick run up to this power chord:

---------
---------
---5-----
---5-----
---3-----
---------

Hang out on this power chord for a moment and then the riff is complete!

So happy about you playing some of your solo songs! Been playing Phobos I and Phobos II a lot recently so it’s great to see it being played on here now as well and being able to learn it

Well look at that. You're going to be extra prepared after your guitar store trip.

Can you please tell Phobos I to practice more? I've tried telling him but he just doesn't get it...

Yes! I love learning songs from the Phobos albums, can’t wait to get started but I’m heading out to a guitar store as I type this so I’ll have to wait until I get back.

Hey, I recognize that minor7 shape! And the palm muted low notes like the 80s! Cool! :D I hope Phobos I knows he's just gotta put the hours in. He can come back from this, I believe in him!

Thanks Casey. There's no genius at play though, just a mild level of competence. Haha!

You're right, that one is long overdue. Thanks for the suggestion!

Nice, those rare moments where you really get lost in the music are the best!

Why are you genius? I've never listened a guitarist or any musician this much, your stuff is so great and inspiring! Thank you Phobos II!

Awesome riff! I haven't explored much of your solo stuff, so this is exciting. For future video ideas, I'd love to unlock my Hidden Potential (verse or chorus)!

Great post! I love when we get a look at your (or Phobos I's) solo stuff. The other night I was zoning out with some music--you know that mental space where you're listening, but not really perceiving? And a song came on that gave me this energy of setting out on a epic journey to do something great, sword in hand and bread and cheese in my knapsack, there's evil and I gotta slay it. When I finally noticed and re-engaged my higher brain function, I realized it was Destiny and I'd just gotten to essentially re-experience it for the first time, A++ experience. I'm rambling, I know, but I just wanted to share that :) Have a great weekend, teach!
