How it works:
What makes this riff cool is the use of 3 note chord shapes.
These shapes are derived from the following barre chord:
x
8
8
8
6
x
I've you've learned barre chords, you've probably ran into this shape at some point. It's often referred to as A shape, because it resembles the structure of an open A major chord.
The root note is the lowest note of the chord. However, the bass already has this covered, so we can leave it out. Now what we're left with is a much easier to play shape which you can play by barring your 1st finger.
x
8
8
8
x
x
You'll slide your first finger to the 10th position at various moments as well, to get the same chord 2 frets higher:
x
10
10
10
x
x
Not only are these easier to play, but they sound brighter and can fit in the mix better. These shapes are used by players of all genres, all the way from Nile Rodgers to Eddie Van Halen.
The other cool thing about these shapes is that you now have your other 3 fingers ready to add extensions and single note stuff on top of the chord. You see this in measure 4 of the TAB.

A note on palm muting:
This prevents the notes in each chord from ringing out over each other. This added separation between the different notes is a big part of the sound. Make sure you're palm muting as close to the bridge as possible, the side of your palm and side of your pinky will touch the strings no more than about a centimeter from the bridge.
