How about some NSP for a change? I think they're a pretty obscure group, but perhaps a few of you have heard of them.
Regardless, here's the main riff to Cool Patrol. It's one of my all time favourites.
The TAB notation is attached to this post as both a PDF and a Guitar Pro file - check it out!
Pro Tips:
- Stay in the 3rd position for the entire riff. This means that your 1st finger is going to play every note on the 3rd fret, your 2nd finger takes the 4th fret, 3rd takes the 5th, and 4th takes the 6th.
- Every time you play the 6th fret 6th string, slide out of it. It's this little nuance that makes the riff sound extra tough.
- Play every note with a downstroke. This results in a more consistent sound than if you were to alternate your picking between downstrokes and upstrokes.
- In the video I add an extra little flourish at measures 7-8 (instead of just hitting the power chord once, I hit it 3 times). This is not in the studio recording, but I tend to play it live this way. But you can just hit it once, I won't tell anyone.
Theory Talk:
This riff is in the scale of Bb minor. It consists of these notes: Bb - C - Db - Eb - F - Gb - Ab.
This is somewhat of an challenging key on the guitar because none of the notes correspond to open strings. Other scales like E minor or A minor are more commonly used by guitarists, because every open string is in either scale.
The little TAB below shows the Bb minor scale shape I use to play this riff. As you'll quickly discover, you really need to rely on your pinky here, as it plays every note located on the 6th fret. On the plus side, I can't think of a better exercise to whip that pinky into shape!
