The photo of the Righteous Army that Eugene brought to British journalist Frederick Arthur Mackenzie was actually taken in 1907 near Yangpyeong County. The photo, capturing their determined expressions, truly exists. The reason Ae-shin is not in this photo is that she is a fictional character, while the people in the photograph are real historical figures. The lines spoken by the Righteous Army in the drama, such as “We are all going to die anyway. But it is far better to die as free men than to live as slaves to Japan,” are actual quotes from Mackenzie’s book based on his interviews. You can search for the real photo and the interviews of the Righteous Army from the early 1900s to confirm this. The drama’s direction was excellent. One standout moment was when Hee-sung captured the pro-Japanese collaborators who sold out the country in photographs, and the sound of the camera shutter was likened to gunfire. That was an impressive touch. Eugene once told Ae-shin: “You move forward. I will take a step back.” Such a noble man. Because he loved her, and when she decided to dedicate her life not to him but to her country, he supported her decision. He told her to move forward and walk her path, assuring her that he would step back and be there for her from behind. He encouraged her convictions until the very end and ultimately gave his life for her cause. I have never rewatched this drama because it hurts my heart too much. Even if I were to watch it again, I feel I would cry at the same scenes all over again. Most Koreans predicted the ending of this drama from the beginning because we grow up learning about this tragic and painful history, from elementary school to adulthood, even studying it for employment exams. Since the drama portrays the events leading up to Korea becoming a colony of Japan, many Koreans anticipated the tragic conclusion. Regarding Hee-sung’s wife: Hee-sung marrying the sister of the Righteous Army member, instead of Ae-shin, was not because of the same kind of love he had for Ae-shin. Rather, it was because her family, as part of the Righteous Army, was in danger. He wanted to provide a safer place for her and her family by bringing them into his household. In the Joseon era, a wife would continue to live with her husband’s family even after his death, as seen with Ae-shin’s aunt still living as a daughter-in-law of the Go family. Hee-sung, as a newspaper editor and a man with firm convictions to protect Joseon, foresaw his death at the hands of the Japanese military. He entrusted his household, including his grieving parents, to her. He likely believed she would care for and support his parents in his absence.

You have to watch "The Handmaiden" (by Park Chan-wook) with Kim Tae-ri. It's worth watching.

Guldana Bazarbayeva

History is ultimately recorded in perspectives, but I viewed Mr Sunshine as the result of Cheoljong losing in Mr Queen

I hope you get to Hospital Playlist soon, "Dongmae" there shows whole different side

Yes, bcs i heard in real it was even much worse and more tragic. I also heard that in Japan people signed petitions to cancel the show bcs it was “overdramatised” and “exaggerated” but Koreans answered that it was even more violent.

As Hina said, everyone’s story is in sorrow. But the most tragic story was def Aeshin’s story. The way she witnessed everyone’s death was so heartbreaking. She must’ve remembered their death till the end and ofc blamed herself, kept the burden.

Guldana Bazarbayeva

The ‘ghost’(?) when Dongmae was being dragged was Dongmae himself ,back then when he came back to Joseon, he kimd of foresaw his future.

This was Tae-ri's first drama role, but she debut in a film before this, which put her name on the map - it's called "The Handmaiden". It's not in your usual Korean movie repertoire, but for Tae-ri, I'd recommend it to be put on your list. It's still a great film made by one of the best filmmakers in Korea.

Cheol-Woo Park

One of the reason why I love this show is that every character was deeply portrayed and their story was not just simple , it was deep and meaningful

Guldana Bazarbayeva

Actually, the photo Heesung took exists. It actually captured Righteous Army. That’s why it didn’t capture Aeshin bcs she was not there, basically fictional character. But Aeshin is portrayed as Joseon itself and everyone was protecting her till the end

I was born in the 80s, which means my grandparents still had vivid memories of how life was during the occupation. A whole generation had vivid memories and lasting effects that people of my generation grew up hearing about, even before learning the history academically. My great grandfather had permanent physical damage from being dragged away by the japanese, while family members were being drafted for war that didn't even involve Korea tbh, many never coming back,, (i mean, it goes on and on) these were very real things that people experienced in their families that had lasting effects for generations. And to be very honest, compared to the stuff that are actually documented and what a lot of Koreans heard from their grandparents as children, whatever that is being depicted in these dramas or movies are only a fraction of what really happened during that time--because what really happened would never be "appropriate" to be aired or screened for all their horror. It is just upsetting when stuff that was real gets denied in the name of historical revisionism,, which is why I guess works like this means a lot to Koreans. Thanks for watching the show! It was nice to watch it again with you :)
