The request Aeshin’s grandfather made to Dong-mae was rooted in the belief that Dong-mae would inevitably die protecting Aeshin, given the dangerous path she is walking. As for Eugene, the request was based on the idea that an American soldier who killed a Japanese official would inevitably face expulsion from Joseon, leaving him unable to stay by Aeshin’s side. If the grandfather had requested the opposite—having Dong-mae secretly kill Japanese officials and Eugene marry Aeshin to protect her—then both men could have stayed with her. However, such a path would neither benefit Joseon nor allow Aeshin to walk the path she truly wants. In the end, Aeshin’s grandfather made these seemingly cruel requests out of his deep love for Aeshin and his desire to protect both her and Joseon.

2025-01-01 11:09:20 +0000 UTCIn terms of what Lord Go asked of Eugene and Dongmae and why they think it keeps them away from her...it's because for Dongmae to protect her at all costs, he may have to still actively sabotage her at some points and become the most distant to her (because she'll hate him for it). Whereas for Eugene, he'll run the risk of being criminally punished if he is caught for murdering Mori as an American soldier killing a Japanese noble. He would likely then not be able to build a life with Aesin peacefully for the days to come. That's why Dongmae says it's a cruel ask of both of them because Lord Go knows that despite the repercussions, they would both do what he asks of them. On a side note, it's completely unheard of for a nobleman like Lord Go to divide his estate and gift his lands to his tenant farmers and servants. But to him, it's a way of freeing Aesin and also reinforcing the significance of keeping Joseon land with the Joseon people no matter the status.
