Both RM and Suga have said they wrote Spring Day about the loss of a friend, but the MV has always been believed to have been about the Sewol incident.
It was revealed (years after the fact) that BTS had visited with families of the bereaved at the end of 2014. Apparently they burned incense with them, comforted them, and were polite. Since then the families cheered them on/rooted for them to succeed. BTS, along with their company, also had privately donated to a fund called “Sewol Families for Truth and a Safer Society.”
In 2017, when asked about the Spring Day MV containing the story of the Sewol Incident, RM said, “I’m cautious about talking of the Sewol Ferry incident, but I think we should feel a sense of responsibility as citizens [to talk about it]. The song and MV can be interpreted in various ways depending on the listener. I want to keep it open.”
In an interview with Esquire Magazine in 2020, the journalist said “There is an undeniable allusion, in both the single’s video and its cover concept, to a specific incident in recent South Korean history”, then goes on to bring up the sinking of the Sewol ferry. “I ask whether it was about a specific sad event, and Jin tells me, “It is about a sad event, as you said, but it is also about longing.”
That’s pretty much all they’ve ever said about it. They’ve spoken on the lyrics and what went into those a lot, but regarding the music video, they’ve stayed pretty quiet for the most part. The common sentiment of the general public is that the MV is a reference to Sewol. BTS is very much aware that this is what people believe/took from the video. They’ve never denied what the public believes, but they also haven’t flat out confirmed it either.
Regardless, Spring Day is a very beloved song in South Korea. The most popular/used music platform in the country is Melon. Spring Day is the longest charting song in Melon history, the most liked song in Melon history, has the most unique listeners in Melon History, is the most streamed song in Melon history, and eventually will become the first song to surpass 1 Billion streams in Melon history (It’s currently at 975 million streams and has never left the charts since it was released in 2017). That’s why you’ll have often hear Spring Day referred to as “The Queen” 😂.
