Mr. Queen Episode 20

"My Life Without Me"

Cool show, thanks everyone for recommending it! On to the next one!

It was fun rewatching Mr Queen with both of you. Also as a fun fact, there were 2 more Mr Queen special episodes of 30 minutes each which were like Epilogues. It was called either "Mr Queen The Bamboo Forest" or "Mr Queen The Secret". It's been a long time since I watched it but it was just some sweet and some funny epilogues from what I remember. Maybe you both can check it out sometime, maybe personally. :)

The original version of this story is from China, and I think the original handled the ending much better. In the end, Mr. queen returns to the modern world and meets the king reincarnated as his doctor in the future (both males, and it hints at them possibly getting together). I think the Korean writer should’ve done a similar ending and have the king reincarnate either as a man or woman in modern time and be bo hwan’s nurse or doc

The King definitely fell in love with the Chef. The Chef also fell in love with the King. That is why I was kinda sad about the ending. The show kept on saying the So Young was not in the body, she was not the concious soul. The decisions, plans, actions were all the Chefs whilst having a background of events from So Young. But the King did not start falling for "the Queen" until the Chef came into the picture. That's the only disappointing part of the show.

Hey y'all, thank you for checking out this drama. When it was airing, I fell in love with this show. Enemies to lovers genre is my shit 😂 you can see how they go from trying to kill each other to falling in love, so that journey will always hold a special place in my heart. In episode 5, the queen talks about different timelines. Queen So Yong is actually Chef Bong Hwan's past life. So it wasn't completely random. Asian culture is really big into past lives I'm sure you guys know. In the real timeline, the real queen, who is selfless and too kind hearted commits suicide, and that's why bong hwan becomes such a narcissistic selfish asshole in the future. When he gets this second chance tho, so yong helps the chef become more selfless and caring towards other people, while the chef teaches the queen to be more dominant and assertive. Even the chef's new life was changed as well, since he wanted to be a better person. They meet each other in the middle and the queen has some of that zest in her that the chef taught her while the chef isn't as selfish and wanted to fight injustice in the present. I agree that the king fell in love with the chef/queen version of So Yong. He loved that she was so unpredictable and crude 😂. Even in his confession for her he admitted that her flaws is what made him fall in love with her, also saving him all those times. Also, the chef definitely loved the king back. Him in the library crying and finally laughing over the painting of him being crosseyed is what sealed the deal for me. That's the only downfall of this show imho. They couldn't wrap it up in a way that wasn't offensive to conservative South Korea so they took the easy way out and made sure the chef was completely out of her body by the end. And yes the chef's storyline wasn't fleshed out well. It's a damn shame cause the rest of the shows writing was really good. My favorite characters were definitely the main couple and court lady choi and the royal chef. The acting is chef's kiss in this show. It's tug of war all the way until the end. There is a spin off called Mr Queen: Bamboo forest, since I know you guys check out some stuff post show. 😊 Or even the post reunion they did with the entire cast was hella funny. I'm glad we could add another queen to the list. Shin Hye Sun is so underrated in the industry. Anyway I'm glad you guys enjoyed (most of) the drama 😅 Sorry this was long as shit haha. And please don't worry, if you guys don't like the show we like. It probably was overhyped by a lot of us, cause of the nostalgia we had when we first seen it. Rewatching it, I can see the flaws more clearly lol. Still a 9/10 for me tho. Can't wait for the next 2!

What a long journey with this drama. It was fun seeing you guys react to a historical drama since Kingdom. Overall, I agree with you guys, I would say not an S tier drama but definitely a good one as it had many funny scenes and the acting was good. You guys will love the new Hwa Jin in modern clothings and seeing her in a different side in Business Proposal and can't wait for the return of Queen Yea Ji.

I understand all of that I also get it’s somewhat satirical comedy however the lazy writing is there present at the end and in some of the filler episodes I will not spoil it for them but many kdramas are rush at the end by the production companies and other factors with this one was Covid they need it to wrap up shooting quickly also they steer so far away from its original source material a webtoon I believe it’s call I could be wrong anyway the payout is much better there. So yeah rush scripts and production made this feel unsatisfactorily all the way through. Great drama but still ambivalent ending. The acting saved it for me thank god

Yeah same for me. It's so odd to think that the King would be okay with the Queen now that the chef soul isn't there. It was clearly shown from the beginning that he never had romantic feels for So Yong & only developed feelings after the chef had taken over. Which means he clearly feel in love with the chef personality. Same with the baby, I feel like when they mentioned she suddenly had the erge to see the king she said it was the baby wanting to see the king. To me that came across as the baby (which is the chef kid) is wanting to be around the father (the king). Even the king started to question how different the queen & chef personality is. I think I would have liked it more if they didn't try make the queen & king romantic after the chef left her body.

yeah...the dissatisfying/ambiguous ending sparked a big debate for many watchers...,especially international viewers. But I think the writer was playing it safe, especially for the sake of the Korean audience. ....this was a very mainstream drama on a mainstream TV channel, and it was based on real history and a real King.... Trust me the writer was not going to pen a gay love story cause Korea is a conservative country. The drama was already getting a lot of backlash for incorporating chinese literature into Korean history. (One of the reasons why it was pulled out of netflix back in 2021.) (The writer lost a similar kdrama (Joseon Excorcist) that was almost done with production, cause korean netizens signed a petition and moved to court to cancel the show cause it twisted a real piece of history.) The main genre of the show was comedy, feel-good sageuk,....and for such, the writers don't normally focus too much on the script, but more on giving laughs lol. And you can tell that the writer was devoted to giving us some good laughs. I wouldn't call it a lazy script, but more of a genre choice. The focus on Joseon as opposed to the modern world, the focus on comedy as opposed to pain and bloodshed,..the music,...it all felt like very conscious decisions by the writer. This was my favorite 2021 kdrama(alongside Taxi driver) for the simple reason that I enjoyed it. And I realised that when I'm enjoying a show, I tend to (subconsciously)get less critical of it, cause, well, i'm satisfied. (Its also the reason why I loved Taxi Driver more than I loved Mouse and Beyond Evil(which had better scripts). Cause I enjoyed the satisfying revenge served by Lee Je Hoon's fists lol.) Didn't expect the ratings lol, but I get it, there was a lot of filler episodes. Anyways, I'm just glad you guys enjoyed it and I hope it was worth it...and it doesn't matter that much to me, cause I don't rate shows numerically lol. I either rate shows as good, great, masterpiece, or 'dropped it' lol. Anyways, Thanks you so much guys for checking it out. There is a 2-episode spinoff call 'Bamboo Forest', that is focused on the King and queens relationship if you guys want to check them out.

Ok so I’m glad Harris mentioned feeling like something was missing because that’s what I experienced watching this the first time around. It reminded me a bit of Itaewon class with the lazy writing at the end like in kdramas the pain the hurt the worst must happened before the end for impact I’m assuming, but somehow it doesn’t work with every story. In this case I feel the king was in love with the chef n not the queen so the idea of him having to live for the rest of his life with a person he simply didn’t know seems iffy to me, regardless of the well rescuing story because we all know he already loved Hwa Jin. And if you were not trying to solved that at the end why put it out there for us to feel cheated. Like they both were missing each other. I saw a special they did of like 4 or 5 episodes after the ending of the show where they try to answer some of the questions it was funny and it was nice seen the crew act together again, but again it only raised more in my opinion. Also there is a a cast interview special which was also tons of fun. I believe everyone was there. Anyway all that aside, now you understand why I’m vocal when I feel a suggestion will not be great, it may not be the kdrama itself but the lazy writing at the end. Thank u guys for this!
