Arkothia Empire Arkothan adjective

Hyclion– Empire farther east, biggest rival to Arkothia

Rohdam– Island principality that the two empires fought a war over.

Syranthuse– Kindom previously between Arkothia and Hyclion. It was split apart and annexed by both. Shares a name with a plant because I’m apparently less random in my names than I thought.

Indarans– First known and fallen civilization. Ancient and known for strange and powerful magic. Believed by some to have spawned the first deities.

Characters

Primary–high reference/appearance chance

Malz- Main character.

Malichi Monhal- The dead kid whose identity Malz is assuming.

Ser Terrance Pressley – ‘Ser Terry’ A classmate who has gone out of his way to include Malichi in social stuff. The youngest knight in the empire in at least two years. Very definitely was not shot by Malichi with a crossbow.

Friendly Classmates

Preston Calhal– A friend made on the way to the sword test. Mother is a famous knight who is disappointed in his lack of ability, though doesn’t say so. He takes after his father who is not a mage of any sort but wants to please his mother and follow in her footsteps. Seemed nervous at first, less so now. In history and general studies with Malichi.

Bart– Mercenary who was Malz’s first opponent in the swording tourney. Now ‘friends’. Seems to be an enemy of Ser Terrance. In Malichi’s law class along with Ser Terry.

Emily Salhal– Daughter of a counter or something, ice cream baron in her own right. A genius ice mage who invented ice cream and uses her monopoly of it to charge exorbitant prices. Took a job protecting a ship that Malz wanted and were opponents during the group fight test, but has become part of Malichi’s friend group since (especially after the crossbow incident with Ser Terry). In Applied Divination. Dorm is across the courtyard to Malichi's.

Erik Hanhal– Guy who annoyed Malz in the archery test. In the applied divination class.

Erika Hanhal– Erik’s twin sister who is a mage with a focus on material shaping magic. Contestant in the hidden object divination game. Chair of the Dialectical Magicalism Club (name pending) which is trying to advance uses of non-combat magic. Malichi goes to her club.

Is part of the Dialectical Magicalism Club (name pending) and Malichi’s Herbalism class. Like Erika, she lacks combat spells. People are weird about her last name.

Clara Talwin – Squire who interacted during the scavenger hunt. Noble from a small northern kingdom which she’s trying to get away from due to family troubles. Prior friends with Ser Terrance and is in the Applied divination class.

Adrian Blakerhal– Mage teammate. Illusionist. Father is a prominent advisor to the empress and so seems extra vigilant about preserving the dignity and power of the imperial family. In the applied divination class.

Ligryn– A page on the same team for the group combat tests who is cagey about her last name. From the principality of Rohdam and is at the academy as a sort of potential ambassador/spy while her brother does the same in Hyclion. Pops up time to time, and is in the Dialectical Magicalism Club (name pending). Was also in the irregular weapons class with Malichi before he found out about his misunderstanding and quit it.

Vanessa Vynhal– Moderator who yelled at Malichi for throwing sand and occasional pen pal. Several years Malichi’s senior, but they cross each other’s paths occasionally.

Carlyle – Mysterious friend of Ser Terry and part of his special secret group. Mage of unknown ability.

Antagonistic Classmates

Riley Plimhal– Squire teammate during the group combat tests who strongly disagrees with Malichi’s view on the roles of the empowered in combat on moral grounds. In Malichi’s math class, but hasn’t interacted with him since the exam.

Vincent Hallenhal– Imperial Princep, thuggish, bad interaction with Malichi at a party and is aggressively trying to gain Malichi’s support in his bid to become the next emperor. Or at least was. Now he’s just trying to get even for Malichi bluntly refusing an invitation. Shares no class or activity with Malichi.

Neutral Classmates

The Mynharran– Crazy looking muscular mage with bald ritually scarified head. He claims he can see the far future, and said something that could be hinting he knows about Malz’s Anar relationship. Hasn’t interacted since the party after the exam, though is in Malichi’s Magic Theory class.

Lucas Talhal– Youth who is the contact for the Talhals. Likes to get into theoretical discussions with weighted meaning which he uses to evaluate Malichi. Shares Malichi’s history class and a dorm building.

Avery Hallenhal– Imperial Princep, strange, adopted. Laughed at Malichi’s bad joke. In the Magic Theory class, though hasn’t interacted since the joke.

Cecilia Hallenhal– Imperial Princep, who showed up briefly in the Dialectical Magicalism club (name pending) but is unclear if she’ll be staying. Seems to be trying to gain Ligryn’s support via extortion(?). Instructed Malichi to stay away from her brother Theodore.

Theodore Hallenhal – Princep in applied divination. Shows a childlike enthusiasm towards the famous teacher and susceptibility to sycophants, but is also rather good at the class.

Spent the last year in Caethlon hunting down Malz and is head of a research group to develop methods against Anthropomancy which she has, upon suggestion of the head teacher, invited Malichi to.

Favoured of the sun and Supreme Hierarch of the Imperial Sect, Johnathan Rakenhal– Administrator of the religion test and creepy dude. Is curious about Malichi’s set of divine contracts and is pressing him for that knowledge.

Gods

Anar- God of ambition, sacrifice, and (oddly enough) pomegranates. Rather than gaining power by influencing the world according to their domain, they gain most of their power by stealing souls from other gods via a ritual given to their cultists that also grant them power.

Emperess Celeste Hallenhal - Demigod. All monarchs are. Gods gain power by spreading the influence of their domains through the world and laws count. However, the power he gains from said laws are split between two or three other gods, so her power as a god is limited, but may grant her immortality eventually.

Inarice- A major deity, especially in Caethlon, and has particular animosity towards Anar who is constantly stealing souls destined for her heaven. Other gods tolerate Anar in part because he pisses her off and other major deities that rely on souls. A balance of power thing.

The mariad cults- There are a number of benign cults around led by weirdo philosophers trying to carve out a divine niche of a domain. Some actually have enough power to grant boons, but most don’t last long as their boon granting economy quickly collapses. The empire allows them because the social order rellies on divine transactions, and the cults encourage them. Since no deity requires exclusive supplication, the empire views the cults as a rising tides lifts all ships situation.

Calmar– God of defensive wars and vigilance. Contracted to Tanyth

Tacyn– God of redemption and quietude. Get’s most of her power by snatching souls from other gods by means of people requesting redemption to avoid afterlives that are bad (like Anar’s).

Vilnar– Gods of protectors. Oath involves swearing to protect a specific locality and the people there of. Boon grants minor strength, but no coordination until higher levels, but high resilience, regen, and perception.

Blood Mariner– God of violent sailors. Strength, regen, coordination especially for keeping steady on rocking boats. Also added buoyancy.

Vanocaur– Whose light is harsh and cruel. Referred to as a dark god.

Mynharra– Weird god who gives seemingly random contracts. Unknown what they’re a god of.

Animal gods– Every animal has a category that falls under at least one god’s domains. They grant less power than other gods, but also don’t count or count less when gods are interpreting oath violations. Are neutral towards Anar since most cultists don’t sacrifice animals due to giving so little power.

The god of cats, who has not deigned to reveal their name to humans

The god of birds, who also have not revealed their name, but doesn’t use words like ‘deigned’ to talk about it.

Days of week

The week is distributed in the American fashion with the weekend being like bookends in that they are on both sides of it. Thus treating the progression of time as an illusion with no point of an event having proper claim to being its 'start' despite seeming to be the earliest extent of it.

Midweek-- Wednesday

Penday-- Friday
