Shock G tribute post and few others...

I know it comes a bit later than expected, but I wanted to pay my respects to the late P-Funk legend Gregory Edward Jacobs aka Shock G - one of the most eccentric hip-hop figures of the early decades. Unfortunately he passed away less than 2 weeks ago, and it was a shock since he was still a relatively active figure and around in hip-hop.

For me, Digital Underground and Shock G will always be special. I know, average Joes might know them in relation to 2Pac's early days or 1989 The Humpty Dance, increasing the Humpty Dumpty persona to wider audiences. I always dug D.U.'s mixture of hip-hop and p-funk.

I'm a big fan of Parliament/Funkadelic (both eras). I can spend days extensively listening to 'Maggot Brain' or 'Mothership Connection', then shifting to Bootsy Collins and George Clinton. I'm definitely not the only one. Many dudes before my time were on it by sampling p-funk classics into hip-hop or grabbing some of that eccentricity and appeal. Digital Underground took both at the same time. And it sure worked. Let's take Humpty Dance (again...). It's notable sample was Parliament - Let's Play House. Of course my generation is retrospecitvely holder to late 80's and 90's than 70's. Thus, I first heard D.U. and was able to introduce myself to Parliament and many other artists shortly after...

This ability to dive deeper is why I can name a handful of hip-hop projects my heroes. These are artists that offer sample filled stuff that's extraordinary. And after that, it's like Russian dolls (matryoshkas) when you open one, there are others inside.
