Power Supply Dying
Added 2024-11-05 16:09:14 +0000 UTCI might as well let you all know that I think my Power Supply is dying. I periodically hear a loud "Clicking" sound that is getting worse by the day, like a baseball card in a bike tire. I have checked all of my case fans, as one of them was doing this a while back, and it's not any of them. It's also not my CPU fan, and it doesn't seem to be my GPU fan as far as I can tell. There is no easy way to test this, so I have determined it's the Power Supply Fan by the process of elimination and a inaccurate measurement of listening to my machine.
My system restarted once today, so I really have no clue what is going to happen. It could die at any moment, or be fine for weeks. There is no convenient Computer Repair shop near where I live now, at least not within walking distance. I am doing what I can to resolve the issue, but you will know if it dies because I will suddenly just vanish with no content. :/
Let us all pray for my PSU! :P

It is an it's not. I mean you can't do anything without a power supply, but they do die or break just like any other component. :)

2024-11-06 13:01:07 +0000 UTCIn all my years of IT, I have never opened a PSU. But I know a bit of your background and wasn't sure what you would think of that. Lol! :)

2024-11-06 12:34:16 +0000 UTCOr too much rest, depending on how you look at it. Lol! Thank you for the crossed fingers. :)

2024-11-06 06:38:14 +0000 UTCDon't you have can-opener😜? Just kidding. There is no need to open it. I've got an electronics degree and even I don't fix a PSU's, I just buy a new one, since you can always use a good PSU in a new build. To be honest I can't remember the last time I had to replace one (about 20 years ago I guess).

2024-11-05 22:00:07 +0000 UTCCleaned it and all of the filters today. Nothing external was the cause, and I have no way to open the PSU itself.

2024-11-05 18:11:14 +0000 UTCNormally, yes. Here, there could be complications just in getting the parts. There might not, though. We'll just have to see.

2024-11-05 18:04:53 +0000 UTCOh nooo!!! If it’s definitely the power supply then it’s a super easy fix, but fingers crossed ;)

2024-11-05 17:56:15 +0000 UTCIt's not hard to replace it yourself, it's just a hassle to reconnect all the cables, unless you've got a modular PSU and you can buy the exact brand and model number. But I would first check if nothing got stuck in the old PSU fan, like a zipty or cable or something.
